A Sister's Promise: Caregiving, Autism, and the Power of Family

I know that you're an artist.

Podcast family.

Aguazita is an artist.

And so I've had an opportunity to even look at some of her work.

It's beautiful.

She creates.

She paints.

And thinking about your story and your journey, did you use art to help you process and heal during this time?

Absolutely.

That was really the only way I could.

After our adventure of me and Brooke's adventure of finally finding a adult home and getting him into a wonderful home in Seattle.

And he was, you know, he was being well taken care of.

And I came back to work and things were all situated well.

It was my time to grieve.

It was my time to process the whirlwind of ups and downs and loss and heartache that I had endured over the last several months of my life.

And so I've been painting on and off for a while since college.

And I've been trying to include it... incorporate throughout my life and I thought this was the moment to really it became a catalyst for healing this is a moment for me to memorize my parents faces and make sure that it was on on on a canvas and it was how I wanted to envision them right and so I had some old photographs of them when they were young, when they were old.

And I started to paint and paint.

And there's a chapter in the book called Art Escape.

And it became my escape.

And it became the way that I captured my grief.

And I don't want to say captured, but released my grief.

But captured their image and captured their memories.

And I just would paint my mom's eyes and my dad's eyes.

And I would remember their smile.
