Oct 6, 2026 · 50 min · 10 segments
In this episode we discuss dog behaviour in terms of factory settings vs downloaded software and what that means. Also wow, look at us with a new episode only a week after the last one... could it…
So we're talking about factory versus downloaded settings and what that means when it comes to dogs.
Yeah.
I don't even know where we started calling it this.
I do.
It's because, like, we had some...
Because I
think we've only started calling it this in the last year or two.
In the last, like, yeah, like, recently.
Yeah.
Because I remember when it really started to come up is we had somebody cold read a dog and we were like, what is in there that, like, is in the dog versus what has been put in there by, like, in this situation.
We had them cold read Fel and it was like, Right.
What is her genetics slash like what is she giving and what is the things we have taught her? Yeah.
Because like as a trainer, that is kind of a skill to be able to read a dog and not only know what's in them, but like what was manmade versus what was in you.
Yeah.
So for an owner, I kind of expect that they should be able to like read a dog in the sense of tell me kind of what's going on.
If you see this dog bark, do you see excitement or do you see fear? Like what do you think is happening here?
How confident do you think your dog is?
Yeah, that kind of thing.
And then for trainers, I take it further and I'm like, do you think that is like genetic? That's factory settings.
That is what's in the dog.
Or is this man-made? Is it a downloaded setting? Is it a downloaded software that we've put in? And yeah, okay, that's me.
Yeah, I think that's where we started kind of explaining it more with like factory settings and download settings.
Yeah.
Because... yeah, again, language is important.
So everybody kind of understands when we say, if we say genetics, there's always a lot of confusion about what we mean.
