"Jesus said to them all, 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world and yet lose or forfeit their very self? Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when He comes in His glory, and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.'" So we're continuing to explore the call of Christ with the focus on the words, "Follow me." And in today's reading are added the words, "Let a man deny himself, take up his cross," and though these words occur in Matthew and Mark, I've chosen the Luke version of this incident because the word daily is found in verse 23, but not in Matthew and Mark.

It is an important word, for the choice that Jesus is calling us to here is not just made definitively and decisively at the life turnaround moment of conversion, but it's also made daily.

The vows that change our marital status are made once and once for all in only a few seconds, but they have to be lived out moment by moment, day by day for the rest of our lives.

Or as the hymn Oh Happy Day says in the last verse, "High heaven that hears the solemn vow, that vow renewed shall daily hear." This following requires us to make the same choices that Jesus did, to live as He lived.

He did nothing for Himself, but 100% for the will of God and for the sake of others.

That's the framework, the soul and marrow of Christ likeness, and this is the crux issue if we're gonna walk in His footsteps and be formed in His likeness.
