New Mexico's governor's race took an unusual turn on Thursday night when Republican Greg Hall appeared alone on the stage for the only agreed-upon general election debate.
Democrat Deb Haaland skipped the KOAB TV event, saying she had a scheduling conflict and was honoring a commitment to meet with farmers and ranchers in southern New Mexico.
Haaland said she offered eight alternative debate dates, but Hall's campaign rejected them.
Hall said he already has a southern New Mexico tour scheduled for those dates, with stops in Roswell, Carlsbad, and Hobbs.
During the 30-minute televised event, Hall answered questions on affordability, public safety, and education.
He also promoted plans to eliminate the state personal income tax, overhaul the Children, Youth, and Families Department, and make New Mexico more attractive to doctors.
Both campaigns traded criticism afterwards, with Democrats calling Hall out of touch and Republicans accusing Holland of failing to show up.
