[gentle music] It's not often that we get a whole group of people to recognize for their heroic efforts, but in this case, we do.
The story starts with LA Police Officers Joseph Murphy and Evgeny Shipley who were on patrol one day in downtown LA.
Yeah, so, uh, myself and my partner, we were on patrol just doing our normal functions, driving around trying to do extra patrol, looking out for crime, when we saw a crowd of people kind of standing near a car.
We didn't realize what we were looking at initially, but, uh, one of the people in the crowd were yelling that there's someone under the car.
The officers quickly found out that the car had run over a person and drug them down the street a short ways.
Our focus was just making sure that the guy was okay.
You know, we're trying to call out to him.
He- he's literally wedged underneath the car and, and we're not hearing any response at all.
So at that moment, um, kind of just training kicked in and then, uh, me and my partner systematically just, just went to work trying to resolve the situation.
In a matter of moments, they rallied together the concerned witnesses, and as a team, they lifted the vehicle off of the injured man.
I wanna say there was at least six to eight of us, and, um, we all kind of in unison just, just lifted this car off of this guy.
There were some severe injuries, but the man was alive, and Officers Murphy and Shipley did everything they could to keep him alive until paramedics arrived.
He was conscious, but he was unresponsive, obviously having suffered those, those traumatic injuries.
So we were just trying to assess, you know, what the severity of his injuries were, trying to provide what comfort we could to him.
We wouldn't have been able to do it without the citizens that stopped and took the time to help us.
I know there were some apprehension initially because, you know, they were worried that the car might fall back down on top of him if we weren't able to lift it.
But, you know, we, we gave it our, our best shot, and then it worked out in the end.
