Well, Gina was a little girl staying with her grandmother in Florida, and her grandmother was trying to fatten her up, those are her words, with pancakes and malteds and ice creams, and it just wasn't working.
Then one day, that same grandmother comes home and Gina's still sleeping, and she says, "Healthy girls don't sleep all night and sleep all day.
Something is wrong." So they fly her back to Brooklyn, check her blood sugar, and when she told me the number, it was, um, it was high.
I said, uh, I think I said something like, "Holy God in Heaven," or something like that.
This episode is gonna run close to two hours because you guys all asked me to stop cutting down long conversations into two parts.
Kristen is a pediatric ER nurse, and when she told her pediatrician she thought her son had diabetes, he told her she was insane.
Her son ended up getting TZIELD, and now Kristen is the nurse giving the TZIELD to other kids.
There's a puppy in this story, a little dog that wasn't trained to do anything, and that dog woke her son up in the middle of the night.
Without knowing it, I scheduled our recording on the anniversary of his first infusion with TZIELD, so I got to ask her that day if he's on insulin yet.
Elena was diagnosed on a family vacation the day before they were supposed to go on a cruise, and everybody they knew told them not to go.
She's in college now and handles almost all this by herself, and when I asked her what her A1C was, she had to turn to ask her mom.
If you live in Michigan, listen to this one, because Sarah talks about a state program that saved her family a lot of money, and by the end, I said, "Let's just bottle her attitude and sell it," 'cause these people, they were good people.
