He had watched his 19-year-old teammate, Kimi Antonelli, look like he was sauntering off into the distance, opening up an enormous lead in the championship.

But George Russell's victory at the weekend in Austria means that he has closed that gap to 40 points.

We're not actually entirely sure how many races are left because we suspect, given what happens obviously with the war in the Middle East... that Saudi Arabia may get shoehorned back into the calendar at the end of the year.

You know, we talked about whether it was getting to him, what was going on with him, but it was a phenomenal Saturday.

That single yellow, which he read spot on, reacted instinctively when Max Verstappen had crashed.

Unlike his teammate Kimi Antonelli, who clearly didn't know the difference between a single yellow and a double yellow and lifted far too much.

That was the difference between pole and not on pole and ultimately victory on Sunday and not.
Yeah I thought it was a good weekend like he came in on the Thursday there were question marks about his future and whether he would be at Mercedes next year and he said look I'm not going anywhere and me and Kimi are staying and I thought that was a positive statement of intent and then he backed up with qualifying you know great as you mentioned he read the rule book and did what he needed to do to take pole and I thought it was just a really consolidated performance in the race.
There was all this pressure, all this pushing from behind, yet he didn't react to it.
I thought there was elements all the way through and, you know, the new rules have been criticised, but it is leading to good racing.
