Why Physical Therapy Failsn | How to Safely Return to Sports After Injury Are you stuck in a frustrating cycle of injury and recovery? Dr. Brittany Corman, founder of Beyond Physical Therapy, reveals…
They do the needling, they do the different things, but they work for a company and they don't have the passion and the knowledge that you have based upon the people that have been sharing that with me.
Can you share the defining moment from your own recovery from multiple knee surgeries that made you realize that traditional physical therapy model wasn't enough?
Yeah, so I realized that there is a big gap between finishing or discharging from physical therapy and actually getting back to whatever sport or activity you want to get back to.
Obviously, for me, it was about getting back to playing varsity soccer at the time or getting to be able to perform in a dance competition.
But for many people, especially in the area that we live in, that could be getting back to paddle or tennis or golf or whatever.
Just being able to pick up your new grandkid without back pain, anything like that.
I felt like there was a disconnect between what standard of physical therapy is at this point.
Many physical therapy clinics in our current communities are going to be in a normal, just basic room with a few tables, similar to what I'm sitting in, but not connected to a gym space that's behind this wall, where you can actually take your patients through higher level of exercises to prepare them for what they're going to experience when they get back to their sport activity or goal that they want to reach.
So it's not just a... you know, strip mall, PT clinic that doesn't have access to weights and cables and maybe a turf that you can really get your patients into the movement patterns and the activities and really prep them so that when they get back on the field or back on the court, their bodies and their mind are prepared for their activity and they're truly ready to get back.
Whereas I feel like the standard of PT doesn't kind of take you to that next step or that next level.
And I think that's really where Beyond kind of falls into play is we help you with the manual skills, the dry needling, the hands-on techniques that you need, but then we make sure that the exercises we're doing with you in the gym space are are preparing you to get you back to your goals.
