Today, I review What the River Knows, by Isabel Ibañez! Goodreads/Fable: Ellie Mano Email: hookofabookpodcast@gmail.com Instagram/TikTok: @hookofabook
This world used to be filled with magic, but now magic has essentially been forgotten and abandoned.
They leave her a pretty hefty sum of money, and now she is in the care of her uncle.
She brings with her just a couple things, including one of the rings that her father gave her before he died.
When Inez arrives in Egypt, she realizes that this ring has a bit of magic within it, magic that could lead her down a very dangerous path.
Inez finds it a little bit difficult to connect with her uncle because she's not entirely sure his intentions are great, and he has this really annoying assistant named Mr. Hayes.
As Inez explores Egypt, she begins to realize that her parents might have died under very mysterious circumstances.
As she continues to discover the secrets of the ring, she also begins to realize that everything she knows might be a lie.
She will have to team up with some very unexpected people to unlock the truth, and maybe even find love along the way.
This book is set in 1884, and I haven't really read that much about 1800s Egypt before.
I knew that was when Egyptian archaeology really became big and a bunch of English people wanted to come look at the tombs and the mummies and stuff, but I really didn't know how it all connected to the rest of the world, including South America.
so I liked that What the River Knows taught me the answer to questions I didn't even know I had.
Inez was a very spunky protagonist, and I really liked the worldbuilding of this book.
