Diabolique

This is a Hitchpod bonus episode.

Usually in our podcast we watch a Hitchcock movie every month and talk about it, but today in a special bonus episode we're watching a Hitchcock-inspired episode as voted upon by our supporters at Patreon.

I am Kat Jones and I'm here with Dan Libke and the bonus movie that we're talking about today is Diabolique, directed by Henri-Georges Clouseau.

Yes, and I'm not going to speak for you, but right up front, I'm just going to apologise in advance for any horrible French mispronunciations on my behalf.

I'm

by no means an expert in such things.

So let's go through Diabolique, because this is a French movie, of course.

And

it actually is Les Diaboliques, which is The Devils in direct translation.

But I guess everyone knows it pretty much as Diabolique.

Yes.

So it was made in 1955 or it came out in 1955.

It has an IMDb rating of 8.0 out of 10 and a very spectacular Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%.

That's really high.

That's very good.

It features our old friend Bosley Crowther.

He gave the film an enthusiastic review in the New York Times.

He called it one of the dandiest mystery dramas that has ever shown here.

And he said it was a pip of a murder thriller.

Ghost story and character play rolled into one.

Wowee.

A pip of a murder thriller.

You don't hear that often.

No, you don't.

And I think this is a backhander at Alfred Hitchcock, surely.
