Saint Therese, preached on October 3, 2026
Robert McTeigueHost
I'm gonna go completely Little Way, and I'm gonna make myself a spiritual child as I grit my teeth in three, two, one.

Well, how can we adopt the notion of spiritual childhood as St. Thérèse has? Well, I, I think of a family who had a very charming, uh, three-year-old boy, and he was a savant for Thomas the Tank Engine.

He was a, a Mormon missionary and a Jehovah's Witness for Thomas the Tank Engine.

He would say to you, "Do you know about Thomas?" [audience chuckles] And his after-dinner treat was he got to watch a Thomas the Tank Engine movie, and he would go up to the array of DVDs like he was a, a sommelier in a wine cellar looking for the perfect wine.

And he said, "Today, I think we shall hear about Duke, the hero of all the engines." He knew the complete oeuvre, the opera omnia of Thomas the Tank Engine.

So after dinner, he would just get up, and he would walk to the shelf, and he would look up, and he would put his hands up, fully expecting to be lifted up.

And I said, "That might be closer to what St. Thérèse has in mind." Uh, we have to show up, uh, we have to raise our hands, and we have to expect to be lifted, and we have to expect that God will do the work.

But I don't wanna stop there because I think sometimes we don't do St. Thérèse justice.

Yes, the Little Flower, the child, the Little Way, but she was a steel magnolia.

And she talks about taking on responsibility for the novices, and she writes, in a clear hand, "I shall now wage war against the faults of the novices.
