[upbeat music] For years, we have tended to assign disease management to separate specialties.

Obesity has been treated by obesity specialists, diabetes by endocrinologists, kidney disease by nephrologists, heart failure by cardiologists, and whilst hypertension is managed by multiple providers.

But we now realize that biologically, these conditions need to be managed collaboratively by all of us, including internal medicine/primary care providers.

Across the continuum of CKM syndrome, these conditions share common pathophysiology that commonly includes visceral adiposity, insulin resistance, inflammation, fibrosis, endothelial dysfunction, and maladaptive neurohormonal activation.

CKM conditions are risk factors for development of each other and can prompt worse clinical outcomes.

Diabetes, obesity, and hypertension can accelerate kidney and cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease is associated with chronic kidney disease and metabolic disorders.

That is the central idea behind cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic, or CKM syndrome.

The twenty twenty-six CKM Syndrome Guideline uses a staging framework to help us clinicians identify where a patient is along that continuum and importantly, what we can do about it.
