The Hunger Games

So we are set in Panem, a dystopian post-nuclear North America.

Panem is a profoundly unequal society ruled by the wealthy evil capital.

Since defeating a failed uprising of the other districts, you know, populated by the have-nots of the world, the capital now rules the world with an iron fist.

So our heroine of the series is Katniss Everdeen.

She lives in District 12.

This is a coal mining district.

She lives with her mother and her little sister.

And Katniss is basically the provider of the family.

She has a BFF named Gail who's broadly in the same situation as her.

So the book begins with everyone in District 12 going to this thing called the reaping, a horrific ceremony where two children are randomly selected to compete in the annual Hunger Games.

This is a televised competition where children kill each other until one is left standing.

And it's apparently very entertaining.

So Katniss's little sister Primrose is selected and Katniss volunteers to go in her place.

The other child selected from District 12 is Peeta, the son of the village baker who has had a massive crush on Katniss forever.

A lot of the book is about prepping for the games via like press appearances and auditions and weapons training.

But when the characters actually get to the arena, all hell breaks loose.

A bunch of people die, obviously.

Key events during the arena section are that Katniss protects a little girl named Rue, who is ultimately killed to Katniss's sorrow.

And Katniss and Peeta team up and eventually become the last two standing.

They also, like, kind of fall in love during their time in the arena.

So at the very end of the game, when it's just Katniss and Peeta left, they decide that rather than allow themselves to be put in the situation where one of them will have to kill the other, they strategically, but also maybe actually, vow that they'll consume these poison berries and they'll commit suicide together.

So the game makers intervene on the loudspeaker saying, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

You know, just this once we can have two winners because they know they need a winner.

And they let both of them win the games.

So Katniss and Peeta go home to District 12.
