In our top story, Oculus's eye drop drug candidate for diabetic macular edema failed to meet the primary endpoint in two phase three trials.

On Friday, the company announced top line results from its phase three DIAMOND1 and DIAMOND2 clinical trials evaluating OCS01 eye drops.

The mean change in best corrected visual acuity from baseline to week 52 for OCS01 was 1.2 letters in DIAMOND1 and 4.6 letters in DIAMOND2.

That compares to 5.1 letters and 5.2 letters respectively for vehicle in the two studies.

In addition, the key secondary endpoint assessing the proportion of patients achieving a gain of 15 or more letters in BCVA was not met in either trial.

In a secondary goal, OCS01 demonstrated a substantial and sustained reduction in retinal thickness.

The company reported that OCS01 was generally well-tolerated with no unexpected adverse events observed during the studies.

Following the results, Oculus CEO Dr. Riadh Cherif provided an update on the status of OCS01.
Despite showing a rapid, substantial, and sustained reduction in retinal thickness in patients treated with OCS01, which is an objective measure, primary, which was mean change in BCVA and key secondary, which was the gainers endpoint for both trials were not met at week 52.

Dr. Cherif added that the company remains well-positioned financially and plans to redirect resources towards other late-stage development programs.

Those programs include the PIONEER program for pryvasector in optic neuropathies and the PREDICT1 trial for licolizumab in dry eye disease.
