S2 E10: The Beach House (2019)

And neglected films, neglected gems, diamonds in the rough.

And this is an example of one.

I can start by reading the IMDb description.

A romantic getaway for two troubled college sweethearts turns into a struggle for survival when unexpected guests and the surrounding environment exhibit signs of a mysterious infection.

Interestingly, that description, at least the first part of it, sounds a lot like the last film we reviewed, Keeper.

Different in many ways, but it's an interesting setup.

It's a little similar to that.

Body horror, drama, horror, mystery, and sci-fi.

Now, we will add the following.

Monster horror, cosmic horror, and possibly even eco-horror.

And it's a bit of a Lovecraftian film as well, which we of course mentioned in a way by saying cosmic horror.

Right.

I do have a bit of an issue with the IMDb description because it says the couple was troubled.

They're not troubled.

The male part of the couple was troubled.

The female, she's actually a very studious, very intelligent young woman.

And she's in school and she's doing really well.

And she's studying for a very, very tough major, as Jeannie actually mentioned during the movie itself when we were watching.

And he's the dropout, the screw-up.

Yeah, I think the reason why they're saying troubled college sweethearts is they really mean a troubled relationship.

Even then, it was touched on very lightly.

But I think that's the point.

I don't have the exact verbiage, but when they were both standing at the door ready to walk into this beach house, which I believe is owned by his father himself.

interestingly his parents are nowhere to be seen throughout the movie but we hear about them a little bit or at least his dad the reason why it's a troubled relationship at least they just started with that is they had possibly broken up and they were trying to get back together
