Grandpa and a picture book — ooh-ing and ahh-ing over every single detail, no rush at all. It became the picture for how we're meant to linger with God's Word. Listen to the new episode by Nicolet…
Psalm 1, 1-3 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.
He had come up for a visit, and they were curled up in the chair looking at her new book.
As I watched them read together, I noticed that they were studying every detail on every page.
My dad, not in a hurry at all, was allowing Josie Lou to look and to talk about all of the details.
It was a stark contrast to how I had read the same book to her the night before going, okay, let's turn the page.
She would point something out and he would ooh and ah over whatever she was pointing out in the book.
As I watched them sitting together, savoring every page, I thought, wow, that is how we should approach Scripture.
But so often, I approach the Word of God in the same way that I had approached that same book with Josie the night before, with hurry and readiness to turn the page.
How often do I approach scripture on a timetable? It sent me down a rabbit hole of thinking.
I began to notice throughout the rest of that day how I was just kind of always in a hurry.
I was talking to a group of moms the other day, and we were talking about how quickly we eat meals, often standing up because it feels like you can't sit down long enough to enjoy your food.
I'm scarfing my food down while Theo is finishing a nap or while he's crying in the high chair next to me needing my attention or in between meetings from one thing to the next grabbing a bite on the go.
I feel God inviting me to sit and to savor the same way that my dad and Josie were sitting there enjoying this picture book.
I feel an invitation to slow down, to linger, to chew on His Word, to explore the flavors.
