And my dad began this later, like this.
He says, Dear son, Mom told me you called home last night.
Apparently he was not home, so he missed my call.
Then he wrote, so I think I should write a letter to you.
If you miss someone's call, just call him back.
By the time I received this letter, it's already two weeks later.
I didn't even remember what my phone call was about.
But my dad, he had a really good reason.
to write this letter.
He says, a letter leaves a deeper impression on your heart, and you can keep it as a memory for years to come.
How good is that? He was absolutely right.
More than 20 years later, I still have this letter, and it has become one of the precious gifts I received from my dad.
So what was so important in that letter? He wanted me to have a deeper impression.
He had me to remember.
because the excitement of moving to a new country had worn off.
Back then, I was studying at Waikato University.
The studying was very hard, and the future was uncertain.
Immigration policies kept changing, so my future didn't feel secure.
And my dad knew all of that, so throughout his later, he kept saying the same thing in different ways, stay focused.
Don't get distracted by the noise out there.
Don't quit, don't look back, don't come home just yet.
I don't want to open door, give me a surprise, you're standing in the front door.
