#141. American Irish armchair build discussion

So first things first, is the chair comfortable? Yes, it is comfortable.

It's probably one of the most comfortable chairs.

stick chairs i've sat in so obviously i have built other chairs and for me they haven't been that comfortable where i think this one is the most comfortable and just to look at the design at least for me when I looked at the design or the chair itself like you know pictures of the of the chair straight away I thought that's going to be a comfortable chair now one of the key factors here that did push us into making one of this is that if you're watching this on YouTube you'll be able to see the angle of the backrest So the angle of the backrest, it is really laid back, and this is kind of part of the design that drew us to it.

Obviously, it's nice and relaxed.

You're not sitting up straight.

Obviously, this chair isn't designed for you to be sitting up straight and to be at, I don't know, maybe a desk doing computer work.

That's not what this chair is designed for.

So I believe.

And obviously, with the angle of the...

The backrest, which is, I want to say, 20 degrees, and then obviously you've got the angle of the seat, so the seat's actually tilted as well.

I can't quite remember.

I want to say off the top of my head it might have been 5 degrees, 10 degrees, something like that, 7 degrees.

I can't quite remember.

I'll have to check that.

But that in itself just makes it so comfortable, and obviously with the added... arm rests it's it's just a winner so even literally 10 minutes ago i had this chair on me decking and i was you know enjoying the sun and i had a drink in me in my hand and it was absolutely beautiful absolutely comfortable so when i was building this i built this solely of american white oak and that's just because i kind of got a bit of a deal on it So the deal I got was basically, where are we here? I got a load of, well, not a load, but I got quite a substantial amount of offcuts of white oak.

These are approximately, I wanna say just some of them were slightly over two inches in thickness and some more around about two inches in thickness.

And there was a number of them at roughly one meter long.

so that was more than enough to get all the components cut out of this and traditionally what I see a lot of people doing is using maybe some elm for the seat which is obviously quite common And some other parts, you know, maybe the armrests and the backrests out of elm and then obviously all of the sticks or the arms and the sticks for the armrest and the backrests, maybe they're made out of oak, ash, things like that.

And I have to be honest, in an ideal world, I would have liked to have done that.

and i do think the contrast between elm and oak or elm and ash is a really nice contrast and i do really really like it but the fact that i was getting or the fact that i did get quite a decent deal on those offcuts because of what sold as offcuts and i emphasized the fact that there were offcuts and i think that's why i got them as cheap as i as i got them i can't quite remember what i paid for them in the amount But it was a good deal, so obviously I took that.

So basically for the seat, what I ended up doing was I got, I believe it was two of these.

Basically jointed them and glued them together.

And that comprised the seat.

And to be honest, the seat didn't...

It didn't turn out too bad for actually having like two section lamination.
