Could God be pruning areas of your life so Christ can be seen more clearly? In Episode 12 of "The Chastening of the Lord," Duane Sheriff teaches how God purges, prunes, and cleanses His people. In John 15, Jesus describes the Father as a vinedresser who prunes fruitful branches so they can bear even more fruit. He then tells His disciples, "You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you." God's Word is the primary way He purges our lives. It washes our minds, corrects our thinking, exposes what is unprofitable, and sanctifies us through truth. God does not need to bring tragedy, failure, or destruction to change us. His Word lovingly reveals what needs to be removed and gives us the truth needed to make a course correction. Like a skilled artist cutting away everything from a piece of wood that does not belong in the finished work, God sees who we are in Christ and removes the dead wood that does not reflect Him. God's purging is not rooted in anger or wrath. It is the loving work of a Father shaping His children to become more fruitful and Christlike.

God’s Correction and Our Failures0:43 – 3:58

Duane SheriffHost

0:43

Hey everyone, welcome to the Grace and Truth broadcast.

Duane SheriffHost

0:48

I am really excited about today because I'm going to continue sharing on how God chastens us.

Duane SheriffHost

0:54

How does God correct His children? How does God discipline us as members of His family? Well, we've looked at 2 Timothy 3, verse 16 on how all Scripture is given by inspiration of God.

Duane SheriffHost

1:10

The Bible, the Scriptures are God-breathed.

Duane SheriffHost

1:14

And all Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for four things, for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly furnished unto every good work.

Duane SheriffHost

1:31

That is so positive.

Duane SheriffHost

1:33

I just love those passages on how God has given us His Word and the primary way He corrects us, instructs us, in what's right and wrong, righteousness, and reproves us and teaches us is with the Word of God.

Duane SheriffHost

1:51

Now again, God can teach us in everything, good and bad, up or down, fail or success.

Duane SheriffHost

2:01

I have learned so many things from failing.

Duane SheriffHost

2:06

Man, I just wish more people would be honest about that.

Duane SheriffHost

2:08

Sometimes I feel like I'm flawed or something, but I have learned from my mistakes.

Duane SheriffHost

2:13

I have learned from failing and falling.

Duane SheriffHost

2:16

And how did I learn? God taught me.

Duane SheriffHost

2:19

God disciplined me over it.

Duane SheriffHost

2:21

God showed me, now this is not right, and if you do this, here's what happens.

Duane SheriffHost

2:26

And I grew, I developed.

Duane SheriffHost

2:29

All I'm saying is that God didn't will for me to fail to teach me.

Duane SheriffHost

2:35

Failing is not His primary way of teaching me.

Duane SheriffHost

2:38

It is the amazing grace of God and the goodness of God in my life that God is committed to teaching me in the good and the bad, but He wills nothing but the good.

Duane SheriffHost

2:50

And if somehow or another I make poor life choices and wind up in the bad or fail or fall, a righteous man falls down seven times, but he gets back up.

Duane SheriffHost

3:00

And he not only gets back up, he learns.

Duane SheriffHost

3:04

God chastens him over it.

Duane SheriffHost

3:07

He doesn't celebrate failing like, hey, let's get up in the morning and plan on failing.

Duane SheriffHost

3:12

Look at the ashes that God took in my failing and the beauty He brought out of ashes.

Duane SheriffHost

3:20

I'm not saying God can't bring beauty out of all the ashes of our life.
