Jimmy was late for another shift at his job at the town diner.
He grumbled in annoyance as he parked his bike at the back of the restaurant and hurried inside, inhaling the smell of grilled onions and cooking meat that greeted him.
He found his paper time card, punched it in the machine with a percussive ding, then shoved it back in the labeled slot.
He was a tall, skinny kid with pants that were too short at the ankles and a mop of unruly black hair.
Jimmy quickly put his jacket on a hook by the door and swung on his white apron and white paper hat.
The sound of rockabilly music and loud conversation filtered into the kitchen, signaling that the diner was already in full swing.
This music drives me batty,
thought Jimmy.
He much preferred jazz or big band music, the music they had in the movies he loved to watch down at the town cinema.
Hey, Jimmy!
hollered the head cook, Anthony, from his place by the grill without turning his head.
Hey, Anthony,
replied Jimmy, noticing Anthony had a clean white bandage on his forearm.
Don't forget, meat delivery comes today.
Can I get a hand when it arrives?
tossed Anthony over his shoulder as he continued flipping burgers.
He sneezed and wiped his nose on his sleeve as Jimmy passed behind
him.
Said Jimmy, as he continued into the front of the diner.
He had worked here for three years, ever since he turned 18.
He had grown up in this small California town, intending to leave as soon as he graduated.
He wanted to move to Los Angeles and work in the movie business, but didn't have enough money to move out on his own just yet.
So here he was, plodding away at the diner.
Despite his grumpy mood, Jimmy loved this diner.
He used to visit with his parents when he was a kid, and the warmth of the place had never gone away.
The black and white tile floor, the bright turquoise blue walls, and the red shiny radio sitting on every counter reminded him of good times and good food with his mom and dad.
Black and white pictures of local celebrities and patrons lined the walls, each with a smile as they held up milkshakes and food, forever frozen in that moment.
Jimmy stared at the wall of photos for a moment, suddenly overcome with a strange feeling.
He felt an anxious, almost ominous dรฉjร vu sense, but couldn't put his finger on it.
