In this episode, I’m joined by Alex Dove, designer and founder of Dove Branding Co to talk all about her experience with rebranding her own business. As designers we know designing for ourselves is…
Alex DoveGuestRobinHostgood feeling though isn't it when it's that when the ideas start to roll and it starts to fall together it feels great
advice for people, to be honest.
I think it's great advice because it's different to what people usually, they say like, oh, set yourself a deadline and only give yourself like the same amount of revisions that you would a client and stuff.
And you just put too much pressure on yourself.

yeah setting yourself a deadline is definitely important but I think like take time like wait until you're confident in that decision before you set yourself a deadline so like I already had my illustrations and everything like pretty much done by the time I set a deadline and then I set the deadline and just sort of did little hacks for myself to make sure I would hit it and yeah I definitely did like unlimited rounds of amends as well yeah we all do though that's
fine it's funny that you mentioned the that you saw my word mark before I announced the rebrand because I did the same thing that you did I designed that word mark that day like I just finished with it and I posted it on my story with zero context I just took a picture of it And I shared it and people were obsessed.
They were like, oh, my God, this looks like you.
And I'm like, OK, it's like

it gives you that confidence to commit to it as well, because it's all well and good saying like set yourself a deadline.

But until you're like really confident that that's the next step for you and that you have got the ideas to like execute it, it helps you.

to the deadline a little bit and another thing I did with the deadline to like help myself actually hit it was setting external pressure I don't know if this is something you did at all but I like when you set yourself a deadline in your head it's just a deadline in your head and you can like so easily ignore that
I have no self-control

yeah no neither do I I'm like if it's if it's something I've set myself I'll just like yeah it doesn't exist but um I I like started to tell people that I knew would hold me accountable and I said like my deadline for mine was my birthday this year oh wow I was only like a few days late it was like two days after my birthday so I'm still counting that But yeah, I told people about it.

And I don't know if this is like feasible for everyone, but I commissioned people to help with it that I knew would then be relying on that deadline.

or like I arranged like a paid brand collab that sort of focused on the rebrand so I was forced to get it done before that point I like commissioned a motion designer to animate my mascot so he was then relying on me to like get it out by that date so then it becomes it's no longer a deadline in your head it's now like a hard external deadline that you've actually got to hit that was like the main thing that's
probably the only
that's really good advice actually i would have never thought of doing that that's so
