This week, Claims Never Sleeps welcomes Gabrielle L. McCann, an insurance professional currently serving as Assistant Vice President and Underwriting Director for Construction Property (West Region)…
You are probably such a huge asset because you actually understood how it worked.
Because that is a complicated industry and to be there and be like, I know the language.
I know what they're talking about because it's not so simple, right? I mean, it's not simple at all.
So you almost had like a leg up coming in because you knew how the system worked.
I do think that that is a, I think that if I didn't have that, it wouldn't have been so easy to make the jump from one, you know what I mean? From outside of insurance into insurance, it was kind of like, we've been looking at bills of lading for the last four years so you have an idea of if there's a tariff right you you know
whether
you know that
we're ensuring it was crucial i would have been a much heavier lift not to say that the learning wasn't the heavy lift but i think it would have been much heavier lift to sort of get my foot in the door if i didn't have it yeah
you kind of like were able to get off the ground running even though you still had a lot to learn but did not have to learn how it all works and have familiarity with the terms and the logistics yeah of the logistics
yeah yeah you have to know how things move i mean and that's when you start and i guess i'll use my experience in pharmaceuticals because that was much more heavily logistics based.
Because all of these things, there is at least one, if not five government agencies that also need to know these things.
And listen, in pharmaceuticals, that's table stakes, right? If there is a shortage for a certain type of drug and your company is the one that can fill the void, but they didn't know how to fill out the forms for customs to clear it, not only are you losing money on the actual product that you could absolutely do really well on because there's a shortage and your stuff is the stuff you can put on the market, you're also going to bleed money on the other side because if your cargo isn't moving, someone's collecting storage fees on it.
And I do think that a big, massive shout out to my freight forwarder colleagues who helped me learn that stuff.
When I first got my start, I would be like, hi, Kelly, what do you mean you need this on the letter? I don't understand.
