Jul 13, 2026 · 42 min · 13 segments
In today’s episode, we have a real, unfiltered conversation about shame as a motivator, why it doesn’t work long-term, and how so many of us internalized it from diet culture, old-school coaching, and…
Let's do it because-
Okay
...
so many people go down that road and it ain't helpful.
So yeah, let's dive in.
What brings this topic up? I feel like we have talked about it in the past.
Like, I mean, we've talked about it as kind of a, in part of our foundational coaching how shame is just really not the move and, but well, it's coming back around again.
Gosh, it just never ends, right? I mean, we had the whole Jillian Michaels thing with The Biggest Loser back in the day.
Mm-hmm.
Just berating people into weight loss.
Not even health or fat loss necessarily, but just weight loss and just extremes.
Yeah.
And then just most recently, we have that Mike Tyson ad at the Super Bowl, which we don't really need to get into it, but just this idea that shame has to be a part of it at all.
Right.
I mean, the way that [laughs] Mike Tyson was talking about himself, and we can put the person on the side, right?
Yeah.
Because he has his own issues-
Right
... that don't make sense for the things that he was saying, but I was such a piece of shit, I was disgusting, I was all these things.
People talk about themselves that way.
I'm such an idiot, I'm such an asshole, I'm just so gross.
I mean, maybe short term, but long term we have seen time and time and time again, I mean, going back to Biggest Loser, how many of those people have been able to sustain the change that they made?
Mm.
