- "No one sees everything I'm carrying." - *Why does nobody seem to notice how much I am actually carrying?* - "Does anyone realize how much invisible work I actually do?" This episode is for the…
I remember one afternoon looking around the house and thinking, "What would happen if I stopped remembering everything? Who would remember the doctor appointments? Who would know we're almost out of toothpaste? Who would remember permission slips, birthday gifts, library books, dinner plans, dentist appointments, and the fact that one child suddenly decided they only eat blueberries if they're cut in half?" Nobody had asked me to carry all of that, but somehow I was.
What made it even harder was that almost none of this was visible.
People saw dinner on the table.
They didn't see all the meal planning I went through before getting things on the table.
People saw clean clothes.
They didn't see me remembering who had a special event coming up and needed certain items cleaned so they could have their wardrobe or costume ready for that event.
People saw happy kids.
They didn't always see the emotional energy it took to calm toddlers' emotions down and help everyone find misplaced items.
I started feeling invisible because so much of what I carried couldn't actually be seen.
Maybe you have felt that way, too, like you're carrying this invisible backpack and it keeps getting heavier and heavier.
All the while, everyone only notices the things that they can physically see, but never, ever think to ask about this weight that you're carrying on your shoulders.
Sister, I have been there, and I would like to share four perspectives that helped me, and yes, I still use them today, to help you understand what invisible labor is costing you and how to reclaim what was taken.
