Post-intensive care syndrome, for those who don't know, is a new or worsening physical, cognitive, and mental health impairments after somebody has been in the ICU for a period of time.

And these issues persist for months to years and sometimes never fully go away for many critical illness survivors.

I think it's very important that those who are going to be caring for these survivors long term understand that this is a reality and it's these people need help.

Just those who have participated in my research have shared that they just feel so isolated and they wish somebody would acknowledge what they're going through.

And when people don't pursue care because they either aren't getting what they need or they're meeting a brick wall with their providers, that ultimately this leads to long-term issues that just continue to fester.

And even like, I don't think any of my providers knew about PICS or even talked about PICS.

It wasn't until I met you at the conference last year that, you know, we were really talking about it.
