Season 5, Episode 1 — What Are You Building?

For our first episode, I want to begin at the end of Matthew chapter 7.

Jesus has delivered what we know as the Sermon on the Mount.

Then he closes with a short parable about two builders.

And I want to read the whole passage first.

Matthew chapter 7 verses 24 to 27 says, Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on a rock.

The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it didn't fall, for it was founded on the rock.

Everyone who hears these words of mine and doesn't do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

The rain came down, floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house and it fell.

And its fall was great.

Now what strikes me first is that both people heard.

The difference was not information.

Both had access to the teachings.

The difference was what they did with it.

One heard and acted.

The other heard and didn't.

And I think coaching is exactly the same problem.

We hear a lot.

We talk about culture and accountability, relationships, development, leadership, character, standards, team first, family.

We know the language.

We know what sounds good during recruiting.

We know what to say during the first team meeting.

We know what to put on our wall.

We know what to post online.

But Jesus' parable asks a much more uncomfortable question here.

Do our decisions actually demonstrate what we say we believe? Because you don't really discover the foundation when everything is easy.
