NBL journeyman Isaac Humphries announced his immediate retirement this week and joined Aaron Bryans on ABC Sport’s Summer Grandstand to reflect on his career.
It's a pretty emotional day of retirement sometimes, but you've now had some time to settle in and understand the decision a little bit more.
Sorry, the announcement happens at one point, but the decision sort of happens a lot earlier than the announcement.
So I'm a couple of weeks ahead of everyone sort of coming to terms with it all.
And something I'm realising throughout this process, it's not just sort of me retiring.
It is, but, you know, my family's been so involved in my life and my career and everyone's sort of going to mourn and grieve this... no basketball sort of phase of life which is weird everyone's always known me as that and my family's been connected through that so uh yeah it's interesting it's a very weird feeling but you know the decision wasn't really mine in the end i couldn't really couldn't really change anything medically i just can't play anymore so sort of had to make this decision
And I think speaking from personal experience, I was really excited to see you come back at the later end of the year and hopefully be part of a playoffs run with the 36ers.
I mean, I guess the positive of a retirement is you spend so much time reflecting on the highlights and the achievements that you've been able to accomplish.
And considering that, yeah, it wasn't your decision for this chapter to come to a close, do you get some form of content getting to reflect on everything you did get to do?
yeah of course um absolutely i think there's uh there was there was little time to sort of dwell and be you know down about it and and lots more time to sort of celebrate and um just be grateful that for the time i did get in the sport and be really happy and proud of what i what i got to achieve you know i uh i think i laid behind a pretty good legacy in many many ways you know different different facets of everything and Um, yeah, I definitely can hang my hat on, on a lot of things and, uh, definitely did, did the thing, you know? So it's, um, yeah, it's just, it's honestly just such a mixed bag of emotions, but I, uh, I feel, feel good about it all.
