Brian Johnson sits down with Minneapolis artist Finick, also known as Josie Hasnick, for a conversation about the path from childhood piano lessons to a more serious songwriting life. Josie talks…
Josie HasnickGuestBrian JohnsonHostHow did being in Minneapolis influence what your voice is and the things you want to say in your music?

I mean every every big city has its like downfalls or whatever but yeah I'd say in general you know um it's like a nice area and I especially love how there's like so many um green spaces and like it's there's a lot of parks throughout the city and like we're very close to a lot of like great parks and like the river and waterfalls and et cetera, et cetera.

And so that definitely has been, like, an influence in, like, the imagery in my songs and, like, my songwriting.

But also, like, when I started, like, playing out, like, at copy shops and open mics and stuff, sort of, like, seeing, like, the other, like, local musicians and stuff was also definitely, like, an influence and, like, not only like what, like I sort of wanted my sound to be more alike and just like sort of having those more like niche influences in my head for like the different sounds of like the specific genre that I'm in, but also just like, having a supportive community in the first place is just really nice.

As like, you know, starting out as a musician, I'd say that the Twin Cities music scene is very welcoming in my experience.

Especially, I mean, as like a folk artist, like singer-songwriter, like I feel like that...

Because, obviously, I can't really say for, like, the other, like, genres because I am not in that scene.

But overall, like, everyone is always so welcoming and willing to, like, share their stuff with you and, you know, just, like, talk and invite you to things.

all this different stuff and I feel like that has definitely been um just really nice like encouragement to keep going and like make more music and just interact with like other musicians and stuff it's just it's nice to have that that sort of atmosphere
that's awesome I've talked to several other Twin Cities artists and they all echo the same thing Josie they all say that the community in terms of singer-songwriters is just super welcoming and you feel supported.
And that's a great thing when you're, whether you're an up-and-coming artist or an established artist, the support that you get from other artists has got to be huge.
