Join Bianca and Julian as they turn their attention to the other half of the Lennon–McCartney songwriting team - a deep dive into 10 of their favourite Beatle-era John Lennon songs. They start by…
um anyway so uh on that note john lennon should we start off my baby um mirroring what we did in the paul episode and uh discussing maybe like the quintessential or the hallmarks of the john lennon sound in the beatles specifically
i think before we do that which we should definitely do let's talk about our own relationship with john
okay
like our is he your favorite member of the beatles
well okay picking a favorite member is impossible but I am a Paul girl I can't lie I'm a huge you're an apologist I'm an apologist I'm a huge Paul girl um but I just really love John's outlook I love that he brought the he really balanced Paul and I think that's the thing I love about the Beatles is it's um it's the the give and take between the two of them sweet and sour yeah the sweet and sour and I think like Paul's sweetness can't soar so high without John's kind of like anchoring him And I think that's what I always appreciated about John.
Um, I also, he reminded me a lot of my dad.
Um, my dad always like John was like his favorite beetle, even though when you would ask him, he would say George, even though he loved them all.
But, um, my dad was a big John fan.
He loved John solo music too.
And, um, so very similar humor to what I kind of grew up with and, you know, um, very witty, sharp tongued, uh, sardonic, that whole flavor of humor.
So I always really loved John's outlook.
And, um, I always really empathize with him because he had been through a lot too.
Same like Paul.
Such a tough life.
Like
such a tough life, like really kind of went through it.
And I think I've always looked up to John as being like this like triumphant figure that can overcome these traumas and turn that pain into great art.
And it's unfortunately fitting that he kind of became a martyr and died in the way that he did.
And he's been immortalized in such a way.
But I think John is almost like this mythical superhero in a way is how I kind of view him.
Anyway, how about you?
I'm definitely a Paul fan.
And I think growing up, kind of what you were saying, the martyrdom of John Lennon was so overwhelming where it was almost like saint john you know he was kind of treated especially if you look at like beatles historiography it was like after his death all of his humor was kind of erased it became he was a serious uh peace activist right was always cynical, bitter, angry at the injustices of the world.
He was almost in the same category as Martin Luther King, where he was this saint that was cut down in his prime.
But that's not John Lennon.
