So different domains will have their own policies that I think are trying to minimize the harms that we're identifying in the paper but yeah to your point um people want to use ai all the time for shortcuts and for um for efficiencies and i think different domains will will tweak those um benefits and burdens differently and that's what we're we're advocating for that we're advocating for more of that to minimize the harms and up the benefits where there are ones

Woodrow HartzogGUEST
Yeah, and Dan, I would just add that I think you kind of answered your own question in terms of how much of one factor does it take to sort of turn things over? Because if you think about the role of exertion, if at a certain point, we talk about in the paper, you could pull kind of a reverse ship of Theseus, where there's enough human involvement that it no longer even remotely resembles the thing that was originally produced by AI.

Woodrow HartzogGUEST
At which point we might say, well, that actually does tend to degrade domains less because of the amount of human involvement.

Woodrow HartzogGUEST
In other words, this is a multi-factor balancing test, which lawyers tend to love multi-factor balancing tests and courts do too.

Woodrow HartzogGUEST
Just because you disclose AI doesn't mean you solved all the problems of cheapening human effort, for example.

So, Separate from the AI point, just explain, Woody, what you mean by affordances and how that slots into sort of the other intellectual tradition you're writing in, which is the idea of science and technology studies, where I think this idea comes from.

Woodrow HartzogGUEST
So an affordance was pioneered a while back by Gibson and others, which is the idea that technologies are meant to act in a certain way and the way in which they're designed indicate how they're sort of supposed to be used.

Woodrow HartzogGUEST
And I think the example we gave in the paper is that a coffee mug has a handle so that it indicates that you should pick it up and put it to your mouth first.
