So to be fair, the only reason why I felt like it wasn't a big push is because I'm a big fan of scrubs.

And that reminded me of JD and Dr. Cox.

So when something really needs to happen, that's where the push came from.

And then you got to remember, too, the first thing he did was cut budget from all of them.

So now she's getting less pay.

I had watched the show many a time, and yeah, I was a, a fan like everyone else and just loved, you know, all, all the stuff everyone was doing and all the, the writing and the cast and just, as you guys know, kind of a perfect storm of all those things put together, which is why the combination of that and knowing Steve, but all of those things were the reason why I called up and was like, "Gosh, would they, would they fit me in?" And you guys did.

Your character has such a great way that he introduces himself to everyone in the bullpen, and we really wanted you to hear it, and then Jenna's gonna share with you a second part that didn't make it in that we found in the shooting draft.

It doesn't even have to be a character.

I don't get it.

You got to smack a little white ball around.

The only good thing about golf is you get to drink as much cool Budweiser as

I was hoping this was coming.

And you know, we used to talk about this when you were just a little girl.

Right.

You know, it's- it's just an educated guess.

And, um, and yeah, there's always a part of your brain that's like, "God, is this gonna work?" Uh, so that was lingering for, I don't...

Yeah, probably until I saw it with an audience.

And, uh, and then it was, it was like, oh.

I- I remember, I remember getting a call from my manager when they were doing some test screenings, and they did, like, a, like, an, uh, back-to-back screenings with two different audiences.

So they, they wanted to see how it was gonna play.

Does anybody ever say to your face like, "I don't find you funny." Like, "You're not my cup of tea," like?

[laughs]

So yeah, I, I, uh, I was, uh, always secretly wanted to, you know, do something in comedy, but I was, I was really, I thought, "Ah, it's too hard." Um, and I had, I played sports growing up, uh, you know, ev- I'd just go from season to season, whatever the sport was.

And, um, and I thought, "Okay, that's, that, that'll be like a, a way to have my foot in the enter- entertainment door and then, uh, use my knowledge of sports." So I thought I was gonna, my goal was to be on like SportsCenter, be like a s- a, a, an anchor.

And, uh, so I, yeah, that was my-

... his, you know, career, uh, with work coming and going and, uh, and I thought, I was like, "Dad, I wanna..." I went to lunch with him.

I was like, "Dad, what, what's your advice? I think I wanna go for this." He's like, "You know, you, you actually, I think you have a lot of talent, and if it was based solely on that, I wouldn't worry about you, but just know there's a lot of luck.

And, and just remember, if you reach...

Um, that was, that was one goal.

Um, but I was always...

I'd always kind of thought golf would be, you know...

I, I know golf's been visited a lot, but, uh, I was always, I would always watch golf and thought, "God, this game is just pure torment." And, you know, w- it'd be fun from a comedic level to get inside the mind of not only a golfer, but the entire family, and how there's just no relief.

It's, it's funny, you talk to these guys, and, uh, [clears throat] Ricky Fowler did a, did a bit on our show, and I, I was, I was talking about the US Open out in LA that he almost got.

I was like, "Oh, God, Ricky, I was pulling for you." He was like, "I was pulling for me."

[laughs]

Uh, so The Hawk, how's it come about?

The Hawk, uh, comes about, uh, really as an exercise, first and foremost, wanting, trying to think of a thing where I could w- work and, and shoot in LA.

[laughs] Um, that was, that was one goal.

Um, but I was always, I'd always kind of thought golf would be, you know...

Do you think that's true? He's kind of a character without regret for a large part of it.

Well, what I love about that conversation is the fact that you were having a debate about that, which was one of the goals of the show, is to hopefully people will watch it and go, well, I think it's this way, and I think he's that way.

And because...

I was excited to play a character that's very gray.

At times, he's a complete scoundrel, completely unredeemable.

At other times, he feels bad about what he just did, and he's trying to rectify the situation.

But then he sees another shiny object over here, and he can't help himself.

Have you been watching it? Oh, I've been watching it

Right.

Uh, and it, it's just a great backdrop.

A- a- and with golf, it's such...

It's fun to kinda dive in in a way that, you know, we kinda got to peek more behind the curtain in a, uh...

It's still funny, but it's an edgier kind of...

I mean, this is, it just feels like we wanted to make kind of an old school comedy that felt more like the 2000s in its humor, and to see the narcissistic ways of this family and how they deal with the pressures, the real pressures on a golf course just, just felt like something that'd be fun to explore.

... are such a great duo.

Do you remember m- uh, making this or coming up with the idea for this? What-

Uh, yeah.

We made, we, you know, this was a reaction to how hard Anchorman was to get made.

So we had so many rejections of that script.

And, and we thought we were never gonna make it.

And I, and at that time, it was the peak, like, the, uh, popularity of NASCAR.

I mean, w- did you know each other before Saturday Night Live, or no?

We knew each other out in LA, and, uh, we both were k- she'd been on the show I think for six episodes the year before as a feature player.

[laughs]

Because the odds are against it.

Uh, so to, to kinda relieve that tension and, and just to remind ourselves that we're, we're making comedy, and we're lucky to do it, and, and to, it, I, it's just, it's one of the things I, I look forward...

It doesn't always happen.

Uh, but when it does, I, I think it's just, it adds an element that, uh-

[laughs]

Or NASCAR.

You destroyed it.

The impetus for this show, to create this, what was it? Where did it come from? Guys, I'm going to hand that over to you.

As a young boy growing up in Miami, I didn't have many friends.

Uh, most of my friends were stray dogs I'd collected in the neighborhood.

What is your relationship with golf?

Luke's a snob.

It's- A, a, a snobby country club kid from Dallas.

How was that re- reuniting with her?

You know, Molly, uh, Molly was my first choice to play my wife Stacy, who, uh, Lonny and Stacy, everyone thinks they're divorced, but they're still married 'cause Lonny refuses to sign the divorce papers.

Um-

Aw.

Um, but I'm just, yeah, I'm just, I was having a moment there just, uh, 'cause the first two weeks of filming were shot here in New York.

The rest of the movie, uh, we, we shot in Vancouver.

But, but we were already, you know, it was one of the...

It happens a lot in films, where you, you shoot kind of the m- midway or the ending part first.

[laughs]

I was like, "What, what was I thinking? What was I thinking?" No, I, I was sit- you know, the, I, I wa- I was just, the day before, thinking, sitting around thinking, "What, what am I gonna say about Molly that has not been said?"

You have to do one.

Uh, okay.

Uh, I'll do one.

Um, uh, I would've made that putt, uh, but, um, uh-

you're on to something.

Yeah, I mean, well, that's what kind of drew me to this This idea is that it is such an infuriating game.

And these golfers just, it's a life of solitude.

You're just hitting a little white ball.

for hours at a time, hours.

To try to be perfect, and you can't be perfect, and you know you're not going to be perfect.

And

Oh, we'll find it

... um, in which, uh, yeah, I did...

You know, started doing some field reporting, and you would, you would anchor the news.

You'd also work the camera.

You would do everything, and there was a light bulb moment in that even though it was this small rinky-dink local cable access, they had legitimate press credentials to all the major sports teams in LA.

And at that time, the Rams, the LA Rams football team, were playing down at Anaheim Stadium, and the editor, you know, of the show, which was actually a teacher of the class, it was actually run out of a junior college, he said, "Hey, we, we need someone to go interview John Robinson, the head coach of the Rams-

[laughs]

He was asking me, he had some friend of his down in Newport Beach who came to listen to him play music, was like, "Hey, so, um, he's talked to Tiger Woods, and Tiger Woods is in for it.

Mm-hmm [laughs]

You know.

And we were on one of these little tour bu- buses, or, or it was a boat.

It was a boat out to the archipelago, and they're, they, they had like a, you know, one of these outside decks.

And I saw this group of tourists, and they were looking and pointing.

And then they sent a scout.

You could tell they sent a scout to go check to see if, if it was really me.

But Will plays a guy who, what's the premise?

Yeah.

So as I'm...

As I'm coming kind of in college, like you said, it's oozing out of me in places.

And I still wasn't like, I still didn't join a college improv team.

I still didn't audition for anything.

It was more kind of what we're talking about, getting out, doing bits, trying to make my friends laugh, pretending to be other people that...

I wasn't in order to make.

What did you say about her and like how her character felt like it was thunderous? The beginning of a new chapter for the show.

Me too.

Yeah, no good.

7, 8, 9, I started to get better again.

And yeah, that kind of three-wood, five-wood, five-iron, I don't know.

I usually take a huge divot and it doesn't go very far.

An Aussie slang for smoko.

Wait, an Aussie slang for, was the word smoker? So the word smoker.

Oh, it's smoker.

Will, how much of you is in him? How much is based on some other real-life golfers? And how much is entirely fictitious?

Uh, it's, uh, well, that's a good question.

I mean, I guess you could draw some parallels, you know, in terms of the real golf world, uh, with, you know, players like John Daly who, you know, uh, have led kind of a crazy life off the golf course.

Um, uh, but for the most part, yeah, I'm not, I'm not very much like Lonnie.

I'm very responsible.

which is why playing someone like this, who's so reckless, such a scoundrel, really at times is very much out for himself.

But then he feels guilty and he actually does have some shame.

He's sharing that experience with his son as well and he actually he could be the new hawk because his name is jace hawkins so um from one hawk to another what is your one piece of advice for taking up the sport of golf and trying to go the whole distance
