I was like, how do you react when Benny's telling you all these amazing things, Selena? What do you say?

Because I say, no, let's be honest.

I also am equally grateful.

And I tell him that all the time.

I just, it makes me feel like it's not real.

And I'll like, sometimes I'll be like, this seems too good to be true.

Like he's so sweet to me, but now I've accepted it.

He's being really affectionate, he's being really open, but there's a part of you that realizes that's what you want and that's what you deserve.

Of course.

It's just a very intimate thing for me.

I feel like I need to sound a certain way or do whatever to make them happy.

And when I get to record with just me and my engineer and maybe someone I trust, I get more out of the experience.

So I just was thinking, "Okay, well maybe he'll stay for 10 minutes, and we'll just talk for a second." And 10 minutes turned into like 30.

Then he went to the other room, and I finished recording, and he stayed there, and then, yeah.

No, no, she remembers this.

Oh, yes, yeah.

We just had fun.

Yeah.

I remember the video part, but it was interesting because, um, yes, I don't have a very good memory, but, uh, (laughs) I just remember the video shoot.

I didn't see anything romantic nor really felt that, but I had a really good time.

And that was probably the first time after years of doing music together and not together, that was the first time I really got to hang out with him.

Of course.

... can you sort of ladder it up to a greater purpose that ultimately your generation and who you were as a young artist, everything you went through, is this your purpose in a strange way?

1,000%, just because I, [sighs] I love being able to look at someone and say, "I know.

And, and not exactly your way, but I do know that feeling, and, and it's really difficult." Um, one story that will forever be in my mind till the day I die was this young boy, he was eight years old, and he was in the hospital.

He had lupus, and he was waiting to get, um, diagnosed and also for a transplant.

I had experienced both, and when I walked into the room, he kept looking down, and he was very nervous.

So I, I kept asking the mother, "Is it okay that I'm here? Should I maybe just step out?" AndAnd they insisted that he, he'd like me to stay, so I just kind of talked about the surroundings and tried to make him feel comfortable and, you know, didn't get in his space.

And all the sudden, as I'm rambling on about the drawings on the wall, he, he just looks down and says, "Is it true that you have lupus too?" And I looked at him and I said, "Yes." And it was the first time that he looked up, and he finally acknowledged me.

... what are you... w- what is one thing that you have or are learning about the human experience that you feel is a, is a, is a through line for all of us that something like Rare Impact Fund is trying to highlight?

Yeah.

And then we started to make every product with the intention of anybody who have dexterity problems.

Um, and I know that might seem like a little thing, but it's really not, because it's actually so helpful for anyone at any age to be able to use the products.

And, and that's why we want to make them easy and accessible, because it's important to me, and it always has been.

So even down to our fragrance, the, the pump is very easy for me to use.

... and he was like, "You get very mama bear about that."

I get very...

Yeah.

[laughs]

Um, the reason why I was excited to release a fragrance was simply based on the fact that I had the greatest two years of my life, and I spent about two to three years finding the scent.

But this was the scent that we ended up landing on after, you know, years of debating.

And when I would wear it, 'cause I secretly wore it every day, I, you know, I got to, I got to meet the love of my life, and I got engaged, and my album came out, and Only Murders was, you know, coming back in, and Rare Beauty.

It just felt like such a, um, fruitful moment for me that I thought, "Wow, this is kinda what the bottle captures for me."

... "Oh, my God." Like, how could I have ever thought that these people would have ever had it figured out? And I feel like a lot of people maybe in my generation are, like, coming around and realizing, like, "Oh, my God," like, "how did we even expect these people to have anything figured out?"

Well, I hope that's, that's what people feel because I, I feel that way about even working on Wizards with the young actors now, you know.

I, I look at them, and I think, "Okay, well, make sure you go and be a kid and do the things you wanna do." I believe anyone can follow their dream at any age, but making sure that you have a balance of normality and stability is so crucial to growing up.

And I can't believe that I get to marry my best friend.

But yes, I, I think for me, I was genuinely set.

But it was once I let go of me just saying I want someone, and I wish I had this, and I wish I had that.

Instead, I changed my mind to, I'm so lucky that I get to wake up, and my family's healthy, and I love spending time with my friends.

People will be like, "Oh no, but if, if I come on too strong, people get turned off." What this time was different for you where it's like he, he's- he's being really affectionate, he's being really open, but there's a part of you that realizes that's what you want and that's what you deserve?

He, he said, "I think it would be really cool if we added, like, a younger character, maybe a female." And Steve liked the idea, and I guess this was really a gift because they had me in mind.
