What's the story there?

So basically, I was at the Raiders facility the day before, and I was waiting for Al Davis, and he was on the phone for like an hour.

So I'm sitting there, and I go in there anxious to play for the Raiders, thinking that he's going to come out.

They make me a really bad offer.

I don't even want to tell you how much money they offered me.

It was trash, right? So I end up, while he was on the phone, I end up looking at my agent because Mike Shanahan called me.

He offered me a contract, and I had to tell Mike to hold on.

Can you speak a little bit more on those?

So when you put a task force together in the NYPD, it's pretty much rudimentary.

Like we're going to work together.

We're going to work the ATF, FBI, any other law enforcement agency out there.

It's not something that's uncommon.

In Suffolk County, there is... a process of putting a task force together where there's a stipend assigned to the investigators assigned to this task force.

And there's a selected investigators that now would be chosen to go work in this task force.

So then what was it that got you guys on to Rex Sherman's case?

Mm-hmm.

Uh, but I, I, I will say this.

It will help investigators, especially from the FBI, to be able to get a better understanding with the mindset of why somebody would become a serial killer.

That will help out future investigations.

That's where the, the, the level of importance is gonna come in, because you're able to kinda get a better understanding.

And God, listen, one thing we, I don't think anybody wants to see is another serial killer case.

But unfortunately, the, the world that we live in, uh, there's gonna be another one.

But you said from what you saw behind the scenes that you don't think he's being transparent.

And the following year, the Gilgo Beach Task Force was born.

So when I reached out to the FBI, They had some concerns, and I said, hey, listen, we're starting up this task force.

We have the district attorney's office working with us.

State police is working with us.

We'd like to maybe see if you could help out.

I understand there might have been some frustrations in the past, and they told me, absolutely not.

We're not working with you or your investigators over there because they've been outcasted in the past.

And then there was the DNA evidence, a sample of Heuermann's DNA collected from pizza crust that he had tossed in the trash.

There's been a lot of talk about child pornography, things like that.

That coupled with the other searches that he was involved in showed what type of animal he was.

And, uh, you know, it wasn't like it was just a one-time search.

This was something that was coupled with a host of other very, very nasty types of searches.

I was like, "Oh, this guy is really a, uh, disgusting, disgusting human being."

So the question then becomes could they reveal information generally to the public that he does not want out there? It's embarrassing, whether it's embarrassing for his family or whether it's gonna cause problems for him in jail, but-

He does not want to bring any embarrassment to his family.

That's what it comes down to.

Well-deserved to the young fellow.

Yeah, this real quiet assassin, you know, in my eyes, a guy that's really all about business.

You know, when he steps on the field, you know exactly what you're going to get.

And that is why they chose to pay him is because not only was he productive in the regular season, but in the postseason when it mattered, when it counted the most, he continued to show up.

And again...

Like he's a guy that demands double team is going to continue to command that the way that he's playing.

And so what this what this does is he opens the floor up for so many other guys, guys like Cooper Cup and company.

So he's got two big pieces that are still going to be part of that offense, Rodney.
