I asked Robbie Leslie what DJing looked like before laptops and USB sticks, when DJs lugged heavy bags of records, sometimes up four-flight walk-ups in Manhattan.
17:16
Well, of course, in the vinyl era, we're talking about other DJs coming in from Manhattan.
17:23
They would carry their records out with them, usually on the train.
17:26
Sometimes they'd have a car service.
17:28
I would usually take four to six bags of records.
17:30
A bag would be about 100 records out to the beach on the train.
17:35
I would say maybe full would be about 40 pounds each bag.
19:55
Roy's reputation soon took him from Cherry Grove to clubs like Studio 54 and Paradise Garage.
3:32
He played all the greatest venues and is still playing.
3:37
There was no live DJ until 1976.
3:41
And then in 76, we hired Tom Savarese and Larry Sanders, and they would work in rotation.
3:47
But they were the best DJs going.
3:49
They were the best around.
3:51
And the talent... that I was exposed to.
3:53
And I mean, I can't possibly dream of a better entree into my career than to listen to these guys, these like top of the field talents, because I'm the, you know, the little kid behind the bar.
5:22
And that's what people wanted.
