So Nora, were you and your team able to find out how maybe some of the local lawmakers in the communities are really reacting to the support for the federal rollbacks with the loss of so many of these manufacturing jobs in their districts?
4:14
It's obviously a different conversation depending on the party of either the governor or the legislature.
4:21
And then obviously very different conversation that you have on the local level with the workers.
4:26
So I focused a lot of my reporting in Kentucky at a Ford joint venture plan.
4:30
There was initially started by Ford and SK under their joint venture, Blue Level SK.
4:36
And in Glendale, this town of about 400 people, they were expecting an influx of thousands and thousands of new residents and about 5,000 jobs at these plants.
4:46
And at the time, and still there's a Democratic governor, a Republican-led legislature.
8:50
And then on the other hand, it's like, okay, how do we future proof? We've got a lot of things to contend with.
22:32
Do you want to be responsible for everything what is happening in the field? Or do you want to have your supply base who is helping you out and is partnering with you to solve this situation?
22:42
And share blame if you have a quality issue.
22:45
That's to put it more cynically.
22:46
They don't just blame him.
22:48
They don't share it.
22:50
Share is too charitable.
22:51
No comment.

Speaking of small pickup trucks, the word came out that Ford plans on selling a lot of

There are negotiations happening right now between the US and Canada, but there's a broader question over what's going to happen with the USMCA, that trade agreement between Mexico, Canada, and the US, which was es- es- essentially allowed to, uh, expire earlier this year.
5:10
Right.
5:10
For a long time, we were wondering if there was going to be a bilateral agreement with each country or a trilateral agreement.
5:16
I think that all three parties are still pushing to have some sort of joint resolution.
5:21
But there's, there's this sense in Detroit, I think, that we're not going back to the way things were, which might seem incredibly obvious to everyone who's been following this industry.
5:30
But I remember just starting, um, following when the levies were enacted in the last year.
5:35
There was this sense that, oh, we'll get back to duty-free trade.
8:06
So what is the total impact of all of this on people trying to buy a car?
48:24
I mean, it doesn't bode well for that company.
48:27
Yeah, this was a huge conversation around the EU trade deal.
48:31
And this is more a discussion of if Ford is going to export vehicles there as well.
48:36
But there's a question of if those customers even want those vehicles, EV or not.
48:41
But yeah, that's a massive conversation we've been having just at Reuters and beyond with our industry colleagues as well.
48:49
do, yeah, do GM or Ford even have a place in that region, you know, kind of outside the U S in general, that's the bigger question.
48:58
And of course they say that they do.
51:49
But Reuters had a big story on this, Nora, that there's a lot of signs that the Chinese industry is headed for some trouble here.
