Tell us
87:53
what's happening.
87:55
Tell us what's going on at New Maloney's.
87:58
We got a lot of lightning and we're looking at a lot of water coming here shortly.
88:03
They're saying we're supposed to get just over a half an inch of rain this afternoon.
88:08
So we're We're doing a little scouting trip this morning.
88:12
Looking for lightning bolts? You don't have to look for them very hard.
90:00
What are you seeing?
64:55
You called me earlier in the week and said, "Hey, man, it's wide open out there." Tell our listeners what's going on now.
65:00
Yeah, it's been a crazy good bite this week.
65:04
We've had solid numbers every trip out.
65:08
Yesterday I came out with a nine-year-old boy, and we got four out of seven of them for him.
65:16
Then this morning, Dale popped off right out of the gate.
65:19
We reset.
65:21
Then we got hit again, but it didn't stick.
66:57
Wise, what are your expectations for the next week or two? Are you gonna continue fishing these, or are you gonna crawl back up to New Maloney some work up there for some of those browns and the trout?
75:55
What are some of the other places you hit?
75:57
Yeah, we're going to hit McClure and Don Pedro.
76:00
We'll run over there and chase kings and kokanee on both of those lakes.
76:05
Then Hogan for stripers.
76:07
Then we'll run down to the Delta.
76:09
You know, sturgeon fishing opened October 1st.
76:12
So we have sturgeon in the works now.
79:46
That's why he's going to be fishing McClure, Dom Pedro, and all those areas out there because there's no place to stay except at the Chicken Ranch if you're hunting out there or fishing out there.
36:24
What have you heard about all the mess and junk floating around out there where you like to fish right now between Rio Vista Bridge and up towards Vieira's Resort?
36:34
Yeah, I've seen some videos down there in Ria Vista with those king tides, and I'm glad I ran north.
36:43
I bet.
36:44
I left Ria Vista on Sunday, fished the Isleton area, went up by the cannery.
36:52
Then I went up by Coquette, and I finally ended up there at Garcia.
36:56
No, we had a pretty epic week.
36:59
There's no lack of fish in the system.
40:26
Now, you're going to hang out fishing the Delta for quite some time right now, but you're getting your boat all rewrapped and everything all set for the chicken ranch, aren't you?
66:24
Right.
66:26
Oh, yeah, it's fun, but if this grass dies back down, I'll definitely go back to the 360s.
66:32
I just have a lot more confidence pulling the 360s with the skinny minis and cut plugs than I do pulling double-bladed spinners.
67:12
There should be quite a few fish running through during that period of time, too.
67:16
Oh, absolutely.
67:17
Those guys that haven't fished it need to jump on board and fish it, especially this year since the Sacramento is open for salmon.
67:25
So go out and target salmon or stripers.
67:28
It's a great event.
110:17
Tell us what's going on out in your New Maloney's Lake this morning.
110:20
Good morning, guys.
110:21
Well, the kokanee fishing is definitely slowing down.
110:25
We ran upriver yesterday, found some schools of fish.
110:29
We're able to get a few fish in the boat, but it's not red hot.
110:33
For the guys that like to jig, that is the way to go this time of year.
110:37
Get yourself some P-line laser minnows and look at the bottom from 100 to 130 feet, and they're a lot easier to get in the boat when you're jigging instead of trolling this time of year.
111:10
It's almost time for the browns to start kicking in.
104:16
So what's going on at New Maloney's right now? Are you chasing trout or are you still chasing cokes?
104:21
You know, we ventured into the trout fish in the last quarter.
104:25
couple weeks just seeing what's available and it is looking phenomenal there's lots of bait balls and those big trout are sitting right underneath them we got them up to five pounds last week So I'm going to pull my boat at the end of next week.
104:43
I have four trips next week.
104:46
I'll probably pull it after my trip on Friday, get this thing cleaned up, my wrap off of it, and put chicken ranch on the side of it.
104:55
And we'll be back at Maloney's for probably three weeks, then down to the Delta chasing salmon.
106:30
When those kokanee start getting red and slowing down and get sluggish and they start just swimming around real slow, they become a quick, easy meal for a big old brown trout, don't they?
106:40
Yes, they do.
76:44
What are the river conditions like? How's it look this morning?
76:48
Well, it's fine.
76:49
It's a little higher than normal.
76:51
Yeah.
76:53
Where it was 16, 17, we're in the mid-20s.
76:57
Wow.
76:58
But there's a few fish out here.
79:42
How long are you going to be playing in the sack, Kyle?
79:57
Makes it tougher
79:57
...
79:57
the whole key to this game is just going slow.
80:02
You know, as much as I hate going 1.0, 1.1, it's just the key to success.
80:09
You have to keep it in that strike zone a lot longer or you're just not gonna get bit.
80:50
Yeah.
80:51
You know, we've been jigging in the late morning, and I mean, that's where the bite is.
80:57
It's easy to get limits jigging, it's just, as everybody knows, it's a patience game, and a lot of guys don't like jigging, but it is the most effective way to catch these fish this time of year.
85:17
And you're just ticking them off so that they'll hit something, aren't they?
85:21
Oh, absolutely.
85:22
You know, purple has probably been our number one color.
85:26
You know, we're fishing from 90 down to 120, and those darker colors just show up better.
85:33
Yesterday we had a good JPEX bite and a headhunter spoon, and today the only fish we have actually caught have been on a 1.5 purple APEX.
89:00
They got to get out there and climb on board with you or set up for one of these hunts that we'll be talking about in the next week or two.
89:06
Absolutely.
89:07
You can visit our website at fishheadhunters.com. Or you could just give me a call directly at 209-531-3966 or find us at Headhunter Sportfishing on all the social media pages.
92:42
Captain, give them all the – go ahead.
92:45
Yeah, the best tip that I can give for this time of year for our lakes Slow that presentation down, put more bend in your lure, and let it sit there and just wobble at slow speeds.
92:57
Keep it in the strike zone a lot longer, and you're going to get rewarded instead of pulling it through at 1-4, 1-7.
93:05
Is there any particular scent or anything you add to your presentation that you think makes a result?
93:14
No, I mean, I've been running, you know, two cents for the last couple weeks, and that's just, you know, regular tuna out of a can, then just garlic.
93:24
I mean, I think the whole key to this time of the year is just slow down that presentation.
93:29
Slow, slow, slow.
93:31
As much as we hate going this slow, it's deadly.
108:59
Here we go again.
109:01
You do not have this color yet, but you will have them soon.
109:04
He is delivering another order tomorrow morning to me.
109:09
So we have some new purples and pinks.
109:13
And, you know, the best thing about that lure, when you have conditions like this, to where these fish get lockjaw, you could bend them and slow way down and still get the same action.
111:49
And sometimes probably big differences in speed, probably speeds up every now and then, probably makes a lot of exaggerated turns and doesn't troll too much in a straight line because he learned that trolling in a straight line takes you from point A to point B, didn't you?
112:04
Exactly.
112:06
Anytime you could interrupt that movement of that lure, especially when you're running live scope, and you can see them behind it.
67:01
What do you see down there? Are you seeing them curling around or cruising?
67:05
Oh, absolutely.
67:06
Like first thing in the morning, you know, I start offshore and try to pick out those feeding fish up shallower.
67:14
Then you'll see those big red marks right underneath those smaller kokanee.
67:18
And that's exactly what's happening.
67:20
Those big channel cats and those browns sit underneath those two and three-year-old fish and just come up and pick them off.
67:29
We got that big catfish last week on kokanee gear.
69:42
Tell them about the boat real quick and then give them the number.
81:44
Well, what's working at New Maloney's right now? How deep are the fish rolling right now? How deep do you have to fish for them? Are they random? Are they starting to pack together? Because what I've been seeing at lakes and hearing from guys, nothing's getting schooled up yet.
81:58
No, Maloney's is just the opposite.
82:01
You know, we're fighting horrible conditions.
82:03
You know, we got warm weather, which means they're going to release a lot of water.
82:08
Then we just got off the full moon.
82:11
So a lot of those guys that are out there fishing that mid-water column, looking at those fish 75 to 90 feet are struggling.
82:19
And that's where, you know, my specialty is, is fishing deep and on the bottom.
87:04
Anybody else know about these?
82:21
company.
82:23
We're always learning new things.
82:25
And there's a couple other spoons that I've been involved with this year.
82:30
And, you know, we have to remember that the kokanee are not grabbing our lures out of hunger.
82:38
It's out of anger.
82:40
So if we put the most erratic swimming thing down there, it's going to, you know, increase your bite ratio.
84:33
What are you hearing on the fish out there? I know McClure was sparse when your last trip out there.
84:38
Yeah, I mean, you know, I just hit it at the wrong time.
23:02
They're dropping everywhere right now.
23:04
So I ran back to where I left them, and there's a few there, but not a bunch.
23:12
I have four on the boat, but we're going to head out to the middle of the lake.
23:16
I got a sneaky suspicion with this much water being released.
23:21
I think they panicked, and they're sitting out there over the channel.
26:44
He said he learned a lot from you.
26:47
No, we went out and we put on a clinic, that's for sure.
26:50
Then the one guy, I think he got his personal best.
23:52
You want to explain the color combinations to me and our listeners and why you prefer those?
23:58
You know, I like really bright colors first thing in the morning, my chartreuses, bright pinks.
24:05
Then when that sun comes up, those get yanked off, and I go with the blues and the darker purples.
24:14
You know, people would understand the color spectrum, that when we start fishing deep, those darker colors stand out better at those depths than your pinks and your oranges.
24:44
It doesn't look like anything in particular as it buzzes by a fish, does it? Does it supposedly imitate a minnow?
24:51
Well, I mean, we do, you know, on a big magnum bullet, you know, they're the size of a shad.
24:57
You know, those lures are inch, inch and a quarter long.
25:00
And the way it was designed was to swim like a snake.
111:12
we going to be using when we're doing this?
111:16
So we're going to be float fishing for them, quarter-ounce float, you know, white line, six-pound, eight-pound test.
111:22
You could go wider if you want, but these fish don't seem to be too line shy.
111:26
But, yeah, mostly going to be float fishing and just kind of drifting down like a dead drift, kind of throw it up above the boat, and then we're just going to let our boat float downriver.
111:36
If we get a couple bites in some areas, we're going to motor back up, drop anchor, and we're going to hit those fish hard.
111:41
These fish are moving around quite a bit.
111:43
The water has dropped.
112:08
How does that happen?
25:02
Well, we talked about New Melones when we were on the phone and, uh, New- Don Pedro, you were just, uh, ecstatic about those fat boys.
25:11
Yeah, Don Pedro, they have some huge kokanee, but you know, it's not the fishery this year where you're gonna go out and absolutely knock out limits.
25:21
But the fish you do pick up are gonna be the, those 18, 19-inch class fish.
28:00
I'll buy that.
28:02
So I mean, the biggest thing is, you know, tackle companies are really good at when they put a lure in a package, they give you three feet of line.
28:11
Then when the consumer buys it, they just tie a swivel onto it and put it behind their dodger.
28:16
Well, you're only two and a half feet too long, and that's costing you 90% of your fish.
28:21
[laughs]
16:47
It seems like that thing just went on fire for kokanee.
16:50
You know what's funny? Both lakes turned on, like, at the same time.
16:54
Maloney's is kicking out, you know, lots of fish, but your average fish, you know, 12 to 15 inches.
17:01
Then when I was over at Pedro, you know, it was a little slower over there.
17:06
But the last couple days, it just exploded.
17:09
All those fish decided to go on the chew, and that's where the big boys are hiding this year.
17:38
They're jumping in your boat for you.
17:41
Yeah, I mean, Maloney's, you could just, you know, pick a spot.
74:37
And some of them have four legs.
74:39
[laughs] Exactly, a lot of them.
74:42
But if people are looking to get out on an evening trip, you wanna beat the heat and absolutely no boat traffic on the lake, I am offering trips that start from 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon until dark or limits are met at a discounted rate.
77:03
Give them all the hookup info so they can get on board with you and do the same thing.
77:07
Absolutely.
