Um, what, what are the things that you, I want, once you've got you, what would be the first thing you do? Now I'm curious.
2:37
All right.
2:37
So I think we talked about this in the last episode, but basically you need to think about hiring from the standpoint of like offloading things that you're doing.
2:49
So if I'm a pediatrician who's just open to practice, I haven't hired anyone yet, that means I'm answering the phones, I'm doing vitals, I'm giving shots, I'm swabbing, I'm calling parents back at the end of the day, I'm doing all of the paperwork.
3:02
Well, I need to decide which of those tasks can be taken on by someone else.
3:08
right so i would probably start by having someone answer the phone because that um is very timely you know if i'm having to answer the phone while i'm trying to see patients then that's you know not really um gonna work out so hiring someone to answer the phones and then i would say okay now could i see more patients if someone was working my patients up for me you know doing the triaging and the shots and things like that so that would probably be the next person And so I would keep going down the list like that.
3:35
And at some point you will get to the place where you think, okay, you know, maybe I have enough nurses, maybe I have enough people at the front desk, but now I need someone to help me manage this business.

11:55
But how do you, I guess, balance that so that you still get a good visit with a family and particularly say like your complex patients who do take a lot longer? How do you balance that?
31:38
But what would be your top three things you've learned in opening and running your own practice?
31:45
Well, the best advice I've ever been given was from a colleague who had built a successful practice and he was nearing retirement.
31:54
And I was feeling pretty stressed out.
31:56
I had been a year of, you know, 24-7, 365 on call.
32:00
I was seeing patients every day.
32:01
I was admitting newborns, attending deliveries, doing inpatients.
32:06
And I was burned out.

47:34
What about hiring staff? What are some tips for the hiring and firing process? And how do you make sure you work with the right people?
6:00
So tell us about that,
6:01
please.
6:02
Yeah, I suffered through all the adults in medical school to get to Peds residency.
6:07
And I always knew I wanted to practice in my hometown, which is the same place where I had worked in that hospital in college.
6:13
And it was kind of always just assumed that I would join the one pediatric practice here.
6:17
It was where I had been a patient as a kid.
6:20
We had had multiple conversations over the years that, you know, they would... make a place for me whenever I was ready.

7 MINS LATER

13:11
I don't
6:15
they love you.
6:16
you.Lemon those.
6:18
[laughs] Let's just, if he's gonna go away for a two-week relationship- 'Cause I heard, I heard, um, my panties were brought up in an episode.
6:25
Oh.
6:25
[laughs] Well, Adam Brindell stuff in an episode.
6:27
Okay.
6:29
He...

19 MINS LATER

25:25
It works
