So they're basically saying, if you just allow us to come in and kidnap whoever you want to kidnap, if you just allow us to come in and shoot whoever you want to shoot, everything will be okay.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
What they're not telling folks is that there are already 170 crimes, including rape and murder, where local law enforcement already cooperate with ICE.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
What they're trying to do now is to be able to arrest people anytime they want who are charged with a crime, who are not charged with a crime.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
In fact, probably 70, 80 percent of the people that they've kidnapped have no connection with the criminal justice system at all.
Antonia HyltonHOST
And so I wonder what you think can be done about that, because that kind of thing, it can't be solved just days out from an election.

this is um when you look at the tactics they don't look like tactics why do you think or what do you know about how ice would run what they're calling a so-called targeted arrest this way on a block full of families right after school gets out
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
Well, what we understand now is this policy is based on black and brown immigrants not being human beings.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
The fact that you would begin to shoot into a car with a man and his son in a community surrounded by children coming home from school and people going to the subway.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
thankfully in new york city we're going to push back on that but it is it is so scary and so troublesome uh and i tell folks you know it's it's okay to be afraid this is a scary moment but we have to have courage in that fear so that we can push back but make no mistake about it i am a person of faith uh and they're doing the devil's work this is all based in evilness and to hear them talk is so astonishing and so disgusting.
Jacob SoboroffHOST
Do you agree with that? We should not have an institution like ICE in this country?

So, uh, returning for a moment to this ICE shooting in a residential neighborhood in New York City, New York Public Advocate Jumaane Williams went all the way off.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
Almost sure that tomorrow morning they're gonna try to make the gentleman they shot the worst human being you ever heard of.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
But I want you to know that a father picking up his child was shot by a rogue agency controlled by Donald Trump.

Uh, but these, uh, ICE goons, uh, uh, apparently did not, at least not to, not to my knowledge.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
That's another lie that was told, uh, by Mr. Mullins and his, and his Gestapo.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
As you know, this is, these are viewed as quotas and numbers, not people and human beings, certainly not a father whose child just saw him get shot.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
And, and I don't know if you do know, but one of the agents there, uh, was recently reprimanded by a federal judge appointed by Donald Trump, who said that he has lied about why he's arresting people, including two people he arrested by accident because they weren't the right people, and one of them was an American citizen.
Don LemonHOST
There have been some who have been found guilty of attacking people, but still they, uh, I don't know of any that are, are in jail or have lost their jobs.

What do you wanna share? What can you tell us about what happened yesterday? I know you were there as well.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
Yeah, I was on the scene, and we have a, um, you know, I spoke to the family of the, the gentleman.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
I spoke to community members who are all scared, uh, understandably so, who are all fearful, who are also all resolved to do whatever they can to protect their neighbors.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
And the one thing I just wanna continue to make clear as they try to, uh, make this person who they shot in the neck seem like the most horrific person in the world, there is absolutely nothing and no explanation that can explain an agency surrounding a car with fake construction suits and guns and then shooting a man in the neck with his five-year-old child that he picked up from school in his car, just absolutely nothing.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
You know, I, I'm, I was, I was, I was proud to see so many, uh, of my, uh, colleagues, elected officials on the scene.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
I think it's important for the community to see their electeds using whatever powers that we have, that I wish were more, but being present and making sure the community knows that we see them, we understand, and we're gonna do the best we can to empower them, make sure they know their rights.

What people cared about was, uh, feeling safe and what that means in their community.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
So the construct is, is incorrect because I think people care about that across the country, definitely New York City.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
What the Republican Party has been able to do is say that you don't feel safe, you don't feel like you can afford to pay here because of people you may not like, whether it is trans, whether it is immigrants.

How to Thrive whilst living with Tics, Tourette Syndrome and ADHD ft Jumaane D. Williams

Yeah, you know, I understand for folks who don't have Tourette's, it's just a weird concept.
J

But I'm hoping people will, you know, take the time to understand and listen to folks who've been through it.
J

So it's not indicative of I mean, we, if you don't have Tourette's, for lack of a better word, your filter is just better.

It also simultaneously does not mean that it was not absolutely devastating and offensive that it actually happened.

Jumaane D. WilliamsGUEST
Similarly, I've been Black for a pretty long time, and I've had Tourette syndrome for a pretty long time.

Jumaane D. WilliamsGUEST
I also have coprolalia, uh, which is shouting of [beep] of socially unacceptable words.

Jumaane D. WilliamsGUEST
I also actually tic the N-word, so like all of those things [beep] intersect for me.

Jumaane D. WilliamsGUEST
And for me, it's just trying to figure out having folks do something which is difficult, which is holding two things at the same time, both equally, and making sure that empathy goes both ways, and that the anger is placed in the right spaces, and so [beep] trying to have folks, l-let them understand that the, the tic in and of itself doesn't describe intent, and that Tourette syndrome is intrusive thoughts, uh, with vocal sounds, with body movements that can cause pain to you, but you still have to do it.

Jumaane D. WilliamsGUEST
And so getting folks to understand that, that doesn't change the harm that was done by the N-word being shouted out.

Jumaane D. WilliamsGUEST
And so for me, the question is: Whose job was it to try to manage and reduce the harm to people like Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo? That's where I think the conversation should be because they had to do what Black folks unfortunately had to do, which is show poise and grace while harm is happening to them, and I don't think enough people took the time to reduce that harm, knowing what could occur in a situation like this.

So interestingly, before I was diagnosed, my mother saw a 2020 special and she said, I think this is what you have.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
There was a white gentleman, an older gentleman, Well, older than it's probably my age now, but he his tick was actually the N word.
Laura StylezHOST
And I was just curious because you did mention, you know, growing up with Tourette's, but is there a world where also when you're growing up as a young person and coming from low income family where you don't have the access and the money to have certain therapies to help you navigate this?

One, when I first found out about my Tourette's right before I got diagnosed, I saw a 2020 special.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
And there was a gentleman on there who was white, actually had the N-word as a tick.
Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
And instead of saying the full word, he would say nickels, pennies, and dimes.

J

The message of Donald Trump was a, a, a populist one, um, that somehow we ceded affordability.
J
33:43Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
That conversation, to the wealthiest people in the world, makes no sense.
J
33:46Jumaane WilliamsGUEST
And we have one that actually works, on affordability and public safety, but instead we usually choose incumbency protection and instead of feeding into those, uh, those conversations.
