BentleyGUEST
4:47
Oh, so pinning people down and pelting them, that's part of the game?
JulieGUEST
4:51
Literally, yeah.
JulieGUEST
4:52
You have to hit people with paintballs.
JulieGUEST
4:54
You're, you're saying that they're machismo and stuff.
JulieGUEST
4:57
Like, that's not what they were doing.
JulieGUEST
4:58
They were just playing the game with you.
JulieGUEST
5:00
A- and you had protective gear.
5:26
Julie, are your brothers usually like that when y'all play paintball?
speaker_1UNKNOWN
6:08
Come back and we might get her
JulieGUEST
6:09
herThis car came along.
JulieGUEST
6:11
Now, it wasn't fast 'cause there wasn't much traffic out.
JulieGUEST
6:13
So I'm standing there minding me own business, and next, this car comes along, and it went past, and then it came back and stopped and said, "Hi.
JulieGUEST
6:26
We're going your way.
JulieGUEST
6:27
We're hoping that we give you a lift." And I said, "Excuse me?" And I thought, "Yeah, right." And he said, "Come on." And that lady said, "Oh, oh God, love, don't, don't get in that car." And I said, "Jesus, I'd be killed." I said, "No way." And he says, "Oh, come on." And I said...
JulieGUEST
6:48
I d- I didn't even say, "No, thank you," so they drove off.
speaker_8UNKNOWN
11:07
Witness number five and six.
MarieHOST
3:01
Um, but you have an opportunity to send these roses to anybody that you'd like.
JulieGUEST
3:07
I, I, I think it would be nice to send them to my fiance, Sean.
SeanGUEST
4:58
That was the first thing that occurred to me, and she would, uh, n-
JulieGUEST
5:02
There is no trust.
JulieGUEST
5:03
You just don't trust me.
speaker_0HOST
3:25
Happy Mother's Day, everybody, and I hope you enjoy.
JulieGUEST
3:30
I've been wondering about reflecting on my own path of practice-
speaker_0HOST
3:36
Mm-hmm
JulieGUEST
3:36
... and, um, how to look at it, how to think about it, um, not to judge it, but just to see where I'm at it in practice and how best to do that.
3:39
Like, kinda give us a glimpse into what Julie was like before Cristy.
JulieGUEST
3:44
I was in horrible shape mentally, physically.
JulieGUEST
3:49
I had just left a job that pretty much gave me no time to myself whatsoever.
JulieGUEST
3:57
I had just been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, autoimmune disorder of the colon.
JulieGUEST
4:04
Um, so I'm trying to battle that, start a new job.
JulieGUEST
4:08
But part of the reason I left that job was to get control over myself again.
JulieGUEST
4:13
So I knew that fitness was going to be one of those big things.
8:06
Yeah.
17:36
Oh, fantastic.
JulieGUEST
17:36
And there's a group there.
JulieGUEST
17:38
We're doing the full marathon.
JulieGUEST
17:39
Some are doing the half marathon.
18:49
... yeah, by that... [laughs]
JulieGUEST
18:50
Yeah.
JulieGUEST
18:51
So for th- tonight, Janine said to me, "Oh, I saw this.
JulieGUEST
18:55
What do you think?" I went, "Let's have coffee and talk."
5:01
... or the hard done by methodology.
JulieGUEST
5:03
Well, yeah, that, we're, we're actually really astounded by that, too.
JulieGUEST
5:06
The, the judge went multiple times on a rant about, um, his disadvantaged, um, background.
JulieGUEST
5:14
Um, he grew up in squalor.
JulieGUEST
5:16
He, um, his mother was neglectful.
JulieGUEST
5:21
But we, we, what we, what we're saying is, where's the line of, yes, you've had a disadvantaged background, you grew up in an not a great situation, but where's the line that you stop using your childhood as an excuse and start taking responsibility for your adult decisions and your adult actions? Um, where is the line for that, and why aren't, why isn't he made to be accountable as an adult for his decisions?
KarynGUEST
9:11
So I don't understand that, that statement.
JulieGUEST
9:13
And it was just this flyaway comment that I don't think he probably had thought about, like, well, there's such a aversion to, um, Aboriginal people being remanded that the judge just made this flyaway comment, not understanding that it shouldn't be used as a defense, but also, too, not...
11:52

9 MINS LATER

21:28
Alors, quel est ton livre français préféré ?
37:38
They, they smell good, and if you eat them, your a- effluent doesn't smell a particular way.
JulieGUEST
37:43
Right.
JulieGUEST
37:43
So, so the, the things that he's getting from our garden are irises, which I love, and which I grow primarily, and ta- tend primarily.
JulieGUEST
37:54
So they do come from our garden sometimes when he brings flowers.

7 MINS LATER

44:29
So since there are no compromises allowed in the court of Judge John Hodgman, what would you have me rule, Julie, if I were to rule in your favor?
JulieGUEST
44:37
Hmm.
JulieGUEST
44:40
Keep the asparagus and the rhubarb in the kitchen, in the refrigerator, on the counter.
JulieGUEST
44:46
Probably in the refrigerator that would be better.
3:26
[laughs]
JulieGUEST
3:26
Which was quite funny.
JulieGUEST
3:27
And then anyway, so we went to the hospital, and, um, I remember seeing her, and she was this little, she looked like a little doll wrapped up in the blanket, and she had rosy cheeks, and yeah, she was very beautiful.
JulieGUEST
3:41
My daughter, I had a daughter that's three years younger than Kiara, so they spent a lot of time together kind of, I suppose, you know, growing up.
JulieGUEST
3:50
They grew up together even though it was auntie and, um, niece.
JulieGUEST
3:54
So, um, yeah, I've got lots of really fond memories about her playing with my daughter and, you know, teaching my daughter how to do handstands and, you know, all those sort of girly things.
JulieGUEST
4:06
And later on, as she grew into a teenager, she spent, she went to school in Shepparton.

11 MINS LATER

JoGUEST
15:33
[laughs]
5:54
What are some of the earliest things you remember?
JulieGUEST
5:56
So one of the first traditions that I, I can remember was every year my family went to the Eastern States Exposition, which is a big fair in the Northeast, and we would go on the first day of that fair every single year as a family.
JulieGUEST
6:11
So it used to be a Wednesday was the starting day, and we would skip school.
JulieGUEST
6:17
My mom would, like, let us stay home, so that made it super special.
JulieGUEST
6:20
And it kinda started from my mom and dad's perspective because my dad's mom, so my grandmother, was a crafter, and she used to s- like, make all different kinds of things to sell.
JulieGUEST
6:31
And there was a, a building there, it's actually still on site of the fairgrounds, called the Grange Building, and my grandmother was one of the vendors in the basement of the Grange that would set up every year for the duration of the fair and sell her craft items.
JulieGUEST
6:48
And we would go in that first day, and we were so proud 'cause our grandmother was there set up and selling, and she was so proud that we were there, and she's like, "These are my grandkids," to all her, you know, little fellow crafters.

8 MINS LATER

14:39
Are there some other favorite traditions that your kids look forward to?
6:28
All right, Julie
JulieGUEST
6:29
JulieHard act to follow.
JulieGUEST
6:31
Um, anyway, I grew up with animals all around me.
JulieGUEST
6:34
My mom owned a grooming shop that was in conjunction with the veterinary, so I was in the vet clinic all the time.
JulieGUEST
6:40
Um, and the local dog catcher would always bring us all the stray dogs and the babies and whatever, so we had animals everywhere.
JulieGUEST
6:48
And I was healing...
JulieGUEST
6:49
I healed my baby duck, um, who was supposed to be euthanized from his leg by just laying there, soaking his leg in Epsom salt, giving him his medicine in cherry tomatoes.

20 MINS LATER

JaneHOST
26:55
Oh, that's-
BradAUDIENCE
16:00
Like, tell me how you feel.
JulieGUEST
16:03
Of the 15 employees that we pay, we get more complaints about you and your work than all the other 14 combined.
BradAUDIENCE
16:37
Like-
JulieGUEST
16:37
You were there for 10 years, but at the dinner table at my house we're talking about letting you go.
3:38
So I'll just get you to read, uh, what would you like to ask me.
JulieGUEST
3:42
Yes, of course.
JulieGUEST
3:44
So my fiancé and I made a decision to upgrade our home in twenty twenty-five.
JulieGUEST
3:49
So this involved selling our previous, uh, PPR, moving in with friends, and then building and moving into our new home in October twenty twenty-five.
JulieGUEST
4:00
So at the time of the dec-this decision and during the build, we made the assumption that both my fiancé and I would maintain full-time incomes for the next few years until we started trying for a family.
JulieGUEST
4:14
However, since then, my fiancé has made, uh, the decision to change career and study full-time, meaning he will now work casually.
JulieGUEST
4:24
Neither of us have had to navigate a casual income as adults with lots of expenses and, um, we have spent a good chunk of our savings, um, building the home, furni-furnishing it and landscaping it because, well, we needed it.

26 MINS LATER

30:46
Right.

JulieGUEST
16:40
[gentle music] You spend all your time with one family.
JulieGUEST
16:45
There, um, were multiple families.
JulieGUEST
16:47
They're all named these inspirational type names, like Serenity, Faith, Grace.
JulieGUEST
16:53
They put me in Grace before switching over to Integrity family after.
JulieGUEST
16:58
But the girls that I was with were the same girls always.
JulieGUEST
17:01
Once in a while, they would switch if they had too many kids and they needed to make a new family.

16 MINS LATER

32:58
And you're sleep deprived, physically exhausted.
19:43
Let's hear it.
JulieGUEST
19:43
It took place almost two years ago, in the summer of 2023.
JulieGUEST
19:47
My husband and I have two little girls.
JulieGUEST
19:50
They are now six and seven, so they were four and five then.
JulieGUEST
19:54
We had decided to take them to Cedar Point for the first time.
JulieGUEST
19:56
He had never been to Cedar Point.
JulieGUEST
19:58
I had been once.
21:10
(laughs)
25:34
Most generous case I could make is they thought she left the bar entirely, 'cause she was hammered, and they're like, "Well, fuck, we better grab her stuff and she'll surface."
JulieGUEST
25:42
I wasn't mad at them.
JulieGUEST
25:43
Happy-go-lucky, having a great night.
JulieGUEST
25:44
So I just figured the night's about to wind down anyways, I'll just walk back to their student house, uh, a few kilometers down the road.
JulieGUEST
25:52
There's a big strip of bars in London, so I felt very safe and not concerned at all.
JulieGUEST
25:58
Like most people who were out partying that night were students, young people.
JulieGUEST
26:01
Halfway through my walk, this guy starts walking with me.
31:03
Did he tell you why he was there? Was he also a witness to something?
52:18
And here's Julia's daughter, Julie.
JulieGUEST
52:21
I just want justice.
JulieGUEST
52:23
I think after we find who did this to her, I'll be able to feel relief 'cause my mom didn't deserve this.
JulieGUEST
52:32
She didn't.
JulieGUEST
52:36
Why did you do it?
