John ConnorsGUEST
Yeah, it's just you're angry and you don't know why, although it is very obvious.

John ConnorsGUEST
Like, even from school, I'd be acting up all the time and I had to do anger management classes with a therapist who, you know, was talking about me father to me.

John ConnorsGUEST
And I was like, as a kid, I was like 11, 12, and I was going, listen, I'm not a posh American person.

Um, because, uh, because they're illiterate, because travelers are illiterate.
J
10:10John ConnorsGUEST
It's, [laughs] it's actually the strength in a way, because they held on to a lot of the stories, 'cause that was the only way to do it, you know? Very much like all the other indigenous cultures or nomadic cultures.
J
10:19John ConnorsGUEST
Uh, so the, the highlight of my childhood would've been that kind of stuff, sitting around the fire listening and conjuring up the images, you know, of the road years ago, or banshees or leprechauns or ancient Ireland, or the kings and queens coming over to colonize people, and me granny, me grandfather, and, like, all that stuff was, like, unbelievable to me, you know.
J
10:38John ConnorsGUEST
And I loved film and television from a very young age, and cinema, but I loved that even more, you know.

John, tell us a little bit about it, what the vision behind it is.
J

Well, I'm from Darndale and it's an area, I suppose, that helped cultivate me as a person.
J
0:21John ConnorsGUEST
I'm very proud to say I am from Darndale, actually, and it's an area that has a bad reputation for antisocial behaviour and whatnot, but the community spirit is very strong in Darndale.
J
0:28John ConnorsGUEST
You know, if I weren't off at Darndale Boxing Club and my trainers there, Joe Russell and Joe Lawler and Gerry Hanlon and Graeme and all that, I don't know if I'd even be here.
J
0:37John ConnorsGUEST
You know, so it's really, it's at the core of who I am too, being from Darndale.
J
0:42John ConnorsGUEST
Unfortunately, Darndale gets a bad reputation and recently Darndale has had a number of suicides among young people.

How has it been since we last spoke?
J
0:42John ConnorsGUEST
absolutely brilliant yeah it is going from strength to strength we were worried there for a while slightly that we weren't going to get a sponsor because i think nearly a year we were nearly a year without it uh james healy who's the owner of magic door studio he actually uh he was the one that convinced us to continue it because we felt at one point in time it was actually you know unfair to continue without without him receiving you know payment but uh

Danielle ConnorsGUEST
There was an energy, a fire, a wisdom that stayed with me and John long after he left the room to the point that we still talk about it today.

It's like when you ask people if they're a better than average driver, it's like everybody thinks they're a better than average driver.
J
15:05John ConnorsGUEST
And so everyone believes they're incredibly important to the performance of their company.
J
15:11John ConnorsGUEST
But the conflicting stuff is they're also sort of believe in team at a radical level.
J
15:17John ConnorsGUEST
right, and the importance of team, and they spend most of their time trying to get their team to execute that back to their strategy, right? So they hold self-importance and team sort of almost together like oil and water, right? And I think the power of that, if you can't understand that they're halfway through and understand that they hold ego and team in this kind of really conflicting, fascinating way, If you can go in and help them translate their vision first and foremost, right? Because again, that's what we all have the power to do because of our creativity, right? And then they actually build loyalty.
J
15:56John ConnorsGUEST
You can build loyalty really fast that way, right? And then they know you're on their team and then they'll start to open up about what their challenges are.

The Side-by-Side Package Deal and International Tax Cooperation

12:52Kara GriffithMODERATOR
I'm curious from your perspective, what are you seeing as sort of the politics and the perspectives of where we are today, and where do we expect to be going in the future?
J
13:04John ConnorsGUEST
Uh, and let me answer that, yeah, as you say, from a business perspective, from an international business perspective, so not just from, from the US, but also in terms of the historic context of where we are.
J
13:15John ConnorsGUEST
So, you know, let's not forget that, you know, the OECD has pursued the BEPS agenda for more than a decade now, and we, we started with, I guess, what, now 38 member countries, which has been expanded to the inclusive framework of 147 countries, I think it is, and jurisdictions cooperating on, on international tax reform.
J
13:37John ConnorsGUEST
Now, you know, BEPS 1.0 was, you know, 2015 or thereabouts, which focused on those 15 actions to combat tax avoidance and harmful tax practices, et cetera, on bringing greater transparency to, to tax reporting and, and the affairs of, of business.
J
13:53John ConnorsGUEST
So, you know, uh, something that's progressed a lot in, you know, but in 10 years' time.
