Um, so if I see a wall, I'm like, "We're going through that wall, so, you know, come along or watch.

Uh, your decision." But for example, right now, um, in the military health system, the TRICARE program, which is really the health plan, right, that provides, um, healthcare services to act- active duty service members, family members, and retirees, has been essentially the done the same way since 1992 when I started.

[laughs] Um, it's been a couple changes along the way, but by and large, the contracts and the way we deliver the service hasn't really changed in 34 years.

And when they've-- encounter these problems, do they know what to do? Is there anything that they can do?
J

Both the military health system and the VA health system obviously have their own healthcare facilities and physicians, nurses, et cetera, so both populations can receive their healthcare in the direct care system.
J
8:31Joanne FrederickGUEST
So that's either the military treatment facilities on the military health side or the veteran clinics and hospitals on the VA side.
J
8:37Joanne FrederickGUEST
The challenge is both of those sets of facilities don't have all of the staff and all of the capacity that they need in order to meet the demand for the healthcare services that the beneficiary populations need.
J
8:50Joanne FrederickGUEST
There's about nine million in each population, nine and a half million military members that need healthcare, and about nine million veterans access veteran healthcare.
J
8:59Joanne FrederickGUEST
So when those VA facilities or military facilities don't have the capacity or capability to treat the need of the patient, that person gets sent out into the community, and they see the providers that the rest of us use for our healthcare needs.
