Constable Jim Weeks was assigned as the primary forensic investigator of the Kananaskis scene.

Jim WeeksGUEST
There's a sign indicating hiking only and, uh, no overnight camping, no campfires.

Jim WeeksGUEST
It's a time of year where the park warden advised that they wouldn't have expected to see anyone traveling that far because the roads, it's, it's a gated, Highway 40 is gated after another couple hundred meters, and no, there is no access into that area for, I, I believe it to be through until the, the months of, uh, there's a six-month period where the road isn't maintained, and, uh, it's not plowed or anything, so it's locked permanently.

Jim WeeksGUEST
He's gone as far as he can up Highway 40 before he's forced to now take a turn onto this, this, this cut line, where it too has got a gate preventing vehicles from traveling up, but he's circumvented the, the lock.

Jim WeeksGUEST
He's cut the, the, the locking mechanism at the base of the gate, and he's pulled out the post and tossed it to the side, allowing for his SUV to travel up that road.

As Constable Weeks made his way through the rough terrain, he was reminded of something about Leeming's vehicle that had struck him as odd at first, but suddenly made sense.

Jim WeeksGUEST
There's an area within, on that road where there's a washout from the glacial melt, from the mountain water that comes in the spring, and they've beefed up that section of road by pour, uh, by, uh, placing heavy granite and, uh, big chunks of granite to cover that washout area, to allow for the washout to occur without removing that section of that road.

Jim WeeksGUEST
And every time, there wasn't a, a police vehicle that we had that could travel through that area without bottoming out the vehicle.

And, uh, that really raised some alarms for myself as to what, what we had here.

Jim WeeksGUEST
here.I had spoken to a few people, and they thought, well, maybe it was a tactic that he was trying to employ to confuse the cadaver dogs.

Jim WeeksGUEST
He, he, it, uh, resonated with me in the follow-up to processing the house where I started finding books in, belonging to him, in his library of books, where, um, they were books on survival and survival tactics and how to live in the wilderness.

As Detective Weeks continued his search, fear grew that they were too late, that key evidence had already been destroyed.

Jim WeeksGUEST
With infrared and UV light source, we could start seeing some smear marks on the floor and on the, on the walls.
