Uncle Reg enlisted as a private in 1940 with his 2nd and 7th Battalion.

He first fought in Libya against the Italians and then went across to Greece and was heading north to fight an advancing German forces that were coming down from the north of Greece and And then unfortunately had to retreat and ended up getting stuck on Crete for 11 months with no real plan to get off the island.

Him and a number of other soldiers were essentially trapped.

And he was kept alive by Cretan villagers who were... feeding him and giving him blankets and keeping him alive.

He would hide in the mountains in caves and travel at night and hide during the day to evade the German forces who were looking for soldiers on the ground.
