It's interesting, I think they come at it from a very different angle.

I think one of the most affecting things that I carry with me was inspired by something that happened to me very kind of early in my career.

I was born in South London, but my parents are both from West Africa, as I said.

My father from Ghana, from the coastal area, which is one areas of the most powerful textile-making traditions.

When I was, um, in my late teens, I visited that area for the first time.

On one of my early trips that I was traveling along the coast, it was one evening and, uh, came down to an area just adjacent to the beach.

And, um, there was a group of people who were playing drums.

So perhaps maybe we could hear a little bit about the sorts of civics and the sorts of gatherings that the V&A East is now offering.

Mm.

Talked about what was coming.

But more critically than telling them, it was listening to their concerns, their fears, their aspirations, and learning from them.

And as part of that process, we had a bigger consultation.

30,000 people that we consulted on every area of operational and curatorial delivery to refine our thinking and to sharpen the ways in which we would deliver.

And you'll see that in everything from our uniforms to the big themes that underwrite the presentation of our permanent collection, everything.

And then as part of that, we would then select cohorts of young people who would come on the journey with us.
