but i don't think that's just you yeah okay
8:52
so i uh had a consulting job big consulting job 22 trying to present to execs at like telecom companies and american express and you know ridiculous and so i would drink i i you know thought that adults drink wine every night i was a red wine girl i went out and dancing with friends in dc and And, you know, I also like could not cook.
9:17
I'd gone eight years to dining hall.
9:19
So I would like have lucky charms and open a bottle of wine in my crappy basement apartment.
9:25
I was so sophisticated.
9:27
It was like out of control.
9:29
But that just started me, A, daily drinking, B, drinking when I was nervous.

24:12
So I'm curious to know what you have learned from your own journey and possibly from the clients you work with about how being an overachiever driven type A temperament personality type, how that has played a part in this overuse of alcohol how would you explain that from what you've learned about yourself
8:55
And he was
8:55
like, oh, let's talk about your drinking.
8:57
And I was like, no, let's talk about my job.
9:01
But, you know, if you're sober, you know that 90% of the issue is the alcohol.
9:08
And once you remove that, everything else gets better.
9:11
And even if you have big things to address, at least you can see them clearly.
9:17
and take action.

22:19
Do you have ideas over the years of doing this as to why moms in business, business women too, like why do we struggle a lot with this? Why is
4:27
But before I get into that, I wanna know a little bit about you and your background, and kinda what brought you here.
4:35
Yeah.
4:35
So, you know, I grew up on the coast of South Carolina.
4:38
I'm a, uh, 14th-generation redneck, and, uh, just growing up, I, uh, my family has some oyster leases that have been in our family for over 100 years.
4:48
My great uncle was a commercial shrimper, so I used to go out and sort shrimp on the shrimp boat with him as a kid in the summertime.
4:55
My dad and grandfather and great-grandfather are just big anglers, so basically just growing up, I was always on the water, so I feel really connected to that, and it's a big part of who I am as a, as a human being.
5:07
And, you know, just being here and my family being here specifically on the coast of South Carolina for such a long period of time, like, you see some of the issues that those habitats are facing from overfishing pressures, but mostly pollution and water quality, and you see a decline in blue crabs.

27:30
Mm.
SuzanneHOST
9:44
We're just assuming that everyone's drinking.
9:47
I've got a story that's way too long, so I'm not going to share the whole thing.
9:50
No, I love your stories.
9:51
Tell all of your stories.
9:53
I love them.
9:53
I was at a conference and it was...
9:57
the thing like four or five days before I quit drinking.

12 MINS LATER

22:04
I was
21:14
Does that make any sense? Totally
21:16
makes sense.
21:17
And I love that definition.
21:18
I really do.
21:19
It's, it's beautiful.
21:21
And I also think that like, we need to get honest about the drinking highlights and lowlights because for me, I mean, I think it's disingenuous to be like, drinking is bad.
21:35
It wasn't fun.

9 MINS LATER

30:46
Yeah.
11:27
Yeah.
11:28
It really is.
11:29
And sort of unlike you, it wasn't my profession.
11:33
It wasn't my livelihood.
11:36
And yet it was ingrained in all the different parts of my life.
11:40
It was how I relaxed.
11:42
It was what I did on dates with my husband.

13 MINS LATER

24:45
