As far as I can tell, you're the first person who went through, I guess it was a leaked copy of his memoir, which is now commercially available, and found, putting aside all the plagiarism stuff in regard to his academic work, you found that in his memoir, he had borrowed plot lines from a super cheesy Spartacus made-for-TV-

It was the most obvious, in part because he took his title of the book from the seventh episode of the first season of Spartacus in 2010, an episode in which Spartacus' wife has this prophecy where she says, "You're going to go to war and you're going to do great and difficult things." And in the opening pro-- in the prologue of his book, Arday's memoir, he sort of splits it into two characters.

One is at his birth, the midwife says something very similar to that line of, "This kid's gonna go on to do great things." And then later he claims in around 2005 to have gone to Brazil on this water mission to deliver clean water to people who need it, third world.

And he claimed there was some sort of shaman or local villager or something to that effect who said to him, like, "I can tell from looking at you that you're gonna go on to do great but difficult things." It was, it was something, it wasn't quite the exact line, but it was so obviously that these had been transposed from the show, in part because in the book proposal that Dan Anger reported on for The Atlantic, he got a hold of the original book proposal.

The character was somewhat different, and she refers explicitly to Spartacus in that, as opposed to just transposing it into whatever she might have said.

And also it was a different year.

It was either 2006 or 2005.

Could you tell us about this recording you got? Uh, it sounds like an activist unit within the academic union at Cambridge?

Ryan says Dr. Einhorn referred Varian to an LGBTQ clinic in Albany to seek specialty care, and at that clinic, Varian opened up about how she was really feeling about her identity.

The real smoking gun in this case was the fact that the psychologist, whose name is Kenneth Einhorn, he was really out of his depth, and he acknowledged that he really didn't have expertise in treating transgender young people.

And so he said to Fox Varian and to her mother, "You should go to seek specialist transgender care at..." what's called the Pride Center up in Albany.

It was a very long drive, and he went there only twice, because it was such a burden to get there.

But while she was there, this was in July of 2019, four and a half months before the surgery, she told the Pride Center things that she hadn't told her mother and that she really hadn't been honest about with her psychologist.

She said that she was unsure about her gender identity, and crucially, she felt pressure to decide by people all around her.

Ryan tells us plastic surgeon Dr. Simon Chin never bothered to speak directly with Dr. Einhorn.

He met with her twice during the nine-week period leading up to the mid-December 2019 mastectomy that he performed on Fox Varian.
