So the RICS took the view that planning should be determined, or what planning gain can secure should be determined by market forces.
6:08
forces.Um, the other group, the Harman Group, said, "No, you've got to start by looking at what land is worth in its, in its ex-existing use.
6:17
Um, therefore, what further incentive do you need above existing use to bring that site forward? Um, and therefore, what can be left for planning gain?" Um, and I...
6:28
with, with regards to the first perspective, the RICS perspective, um, my view initially was, well, that can't work because the planning system seeks to take part of land value to pay for planning gain.
6:41
Um, so you, you've, you've got a direct, uh, tug-of-war between the landowner on the one hand who's seeking to maximize their land value and the planning system on the other that's seeking to maximize planning gain for the public to provide affordable housing and infrastructure and everything else.
6:57
So there, there, there is a, a direct tug-of-war.
6:59
So how, how does viability sit in that tug-of-war? That was the question that everyone was trying to grapple with.

30:14
They then had a much easier ride through planning.
1:19
And how about you, Anthony?
1:21
Uh, yeah, so, um, so now I'm a, I'm a patent attorney, but prior to that I was 10 years in industry, so including an initial stint working with Simon, um, uh, in sort of ophthalmic lens design, and then, uh, sort of five years in software development and simulators, sort of, sort of, uh, sort of technology development.
1:43
And then, um, I've been a patent attorney now for a almost 20, 25 years, and I service clients in the sort of photonics, computing, patented inventions, over a, a fairly broad range of, uh, physics-type inventions.

8 MINS LATER

10:04
Mm-hmm.
10:04
Sorry.
10:05
Um, there's also, there's also a step in there about being honest with yourself.
10:10
Maybe, maybe the issue in, in the how you're approaching, are you giving this person the right background, system support, and so forth? So having, having that sort of evaluation of, of what your role in the whole thing is before sort of going in and saying, "Oh, well, I need to have this conversation because, you know, so-and-so is not meeting this particular whatever." But just, like, well, let's ask ourselves, what, what are we doing to help in this situation? Well, what, you know, maybe it's, maybe it's me, not you.
10:38
[laughs]
6:40
There's a story about your very first listing
6:42
on the real estate side.
6:44
Yeah, that was great.
6:45
So coming from the military, I'm a hard charger.
6:48
I didn't know, okay, going into real estate and all the real estate agents, everybody, you may know or you might not know.
6:53
I didn't know the difference between a $200,000 house and a $10 million house.
6:56
I thought real estate was real estate.

11 MINS LATER

17:36
How does that
18:37
So, Anthony, what got you involved? Do you have a relationship with anybody that has been affected by cancer? I think almost all of us do, but tell me a little bit about your story.
18:49
Well, for my story, it's a bit different with Victoria's.
18:53
However, I...
18:55
I'm part of the pre-med club, and they sent out a volunteering opportunity.
19:00
And I saw that through my email when I was doing my studies during the exam season.
19:09
And so I signed up to see, like, hey, why not join, right? Because in my high school at Dutchess Park, they also hosted their own Relay for Life.
19:20
And I enjoyed it so much being part of the Dutchess Park Relay for Life.
22:16
Not knowing the outcome of this year's relay, do you think it's something that you would probably continue being involved with once your schooling is done, depending on where... you're going to be after that do you think so anthony is that something that you might be stay involved with
17:58
So when someone is presenting, either on a conference stage, in a town hall meeting, at a board presentation, or even in a team meeting, what are the different voices they should consider tapping into?
18:09
Oh, well, I'm going to start with the three.
18:11
We talked about the engagement loop with call to think, call to feel, call to act.
18:17
So for the call to think, there's a couple of voices that are really good here.
18:22
The ones that come to mind are teacher, right? A good teacher curates information, teaches just a segment that the audience can easily absorb.
18:33
Another voice that's really good there is trusted advisor, right? where you're taking the audience through a set of choices in front of them and giving them the ability to make a good decision based on what's in front of them.
18:48
So the call to think would be teacher or trusted advisor.
23:35
And maybe we can use like a board meeting as an example.
