What is deity work? If I boil it down at its simplest, deity work is building some type of spiritual relationship with a deity and a deity is a god or a goddess.
That relationship can look very different depending on the person, depending on the deity, the tradition they're working with, and what their personal practice looks like outside of it.
So for some people, it's very devotional.
They pray to a deity.
They make offerings to it.
They celebrate their sacred days, create altars.
They just incorporate that deity into their everyday spiritual life.
For other people, it's more like a working relationship where they specifically turn to a deity for guidance or support around certain areas of life.
Maybe they work with a deity associated with wisdom or a deity associated with love or war or creativity, sea magic, or something else entirely.
There are so, so, so many things that a god or goddess can be associated with can work with and then for some people deity work is extremely very deeply religious for others it exists within a broader witchcraft practice and it's much more focused on personal spiritual connection just feeling in tune with creation And I want to make something really, really clear right at the beginning of this podcast.
You do not have to work with deities to be a witch.
You can absolutely be a witch who never, their whole practice, never works with a god or a goddess.
You can work with spirits instead, or you can work with ancestors.
You can practice completely secular deities.
You can work with nature and the moon, your own intuition, the elements, whatever makes sense to you.
I want you to know deity work is an option.
It is not a requirement for graduating from Witchcraft 101.
So then why, if it's not a requirement, why would somebody choose to work with a deity in the first place? There are a lot of reasons for that.
Sometimes people are looking for a deeper spiritual connection.
Sometimes they want guidance or a sense of companionship on their path.
Sometimes they feel inspired by the mythology or symbolism or stories that surround a particular deity.
Sometimes a deity seems to represent qualities that they, the witch, wants to cultivate within themselves.
Maybe you're drawn to a goddess associated with independence because you are in a stage of life where you're learning how to stand on your own.
Or maybe you are drawn to a God associated with creativity because you're trying to reconnect with your artistic side.
Maybe you feel connected to a deity because their stories resonate with something that you're going through.
