I'll be honest, my first reaction was suspicion. When Lorna Lyons told me she had a thriving business, earned well, and wasn't grinding every single day, something in me bristled. Is she a con…

Carly Osman-HolmeHostSo I have this inherent belief that in order to make money, you have to be working so bloody hard, and I'm talking hard to the fact that every single working day you need to be grinding.
Um, when we first spoken, as I've been thinking about what I wanna talk about, so many feelings started coming up.
There was a lot of, "Oh, is she a bit of a con artist? I'm slightly distrustful," or, "This sounds like a pyramid scheme.
I, I don't know if I'd do this." And all of these kind of came up and, and when I tried to drill down, I think actually it's more envy, a little bit of jealousy.
How have you got there, but I'm not there? So that's where I wanna start with.

this? It's so interesting that you present the conversation in that way, Carly, and, you know, it's to- I, I get it.

I think my introduction into business was grossly different to your introduction into business.

You got into business in order to be able to fund your life, whereas my inroad into business was to find freedom.

Like, I was a teacher for decades before, and after having my children, I decided to start a business so that I could be at home and be present for them.

And so when I was starting my business, at the forefront of my mind was, "What is going to give me time freedom?" And everything else wasn't an option, if I'm honest, because I had my permanent pensionable job there already.

I had a place to go back to, so the only thing I was gonna replace it with was a better life, a better quality life, and that was my prime focus when I got into starting a business.

Does that make sense in terms of our mindset piece as we approached what a business looks like? And in terms of the word hard that you use, I don't want us to mis-, um, construe the difference of the word hard with the word effort.

Because I put a lot of effort into my business, a lot of effort into my business.

My mind is never switched off from it, but it's different to working hard because for me, working hard meant, like what you said there, all of the hours, all of the days in the business with people.
