Jul 22, 2026 · 10 min · 10 segments
Outdoor gigs are every singer's nemesis — no walls, no ceiling, nothing for your sound to bounce off, so you often can't hear yourself. Add heat, wind, and dust, and it's a fast track to vocal strain…
Amber Mogg CatheyHostI want to give you some real tangible tools that you can work with if you are playing outdoor gigs, whether they are a small cookout to a massive festival in this warmer summer weather to make them as successful as possible.
The first thing I'm going to talk about, you're going to be shocked, hydration.
But man, it is just beyond key if you are playing outside and if you are playing outside in heat.
And one of the things I want to point out about hydration, of course, you want to be sipping liquid that entire time during the gig to keep things as moist and feeling good as you can.
So you really want to start hydrating if you've got an outdoor gig the day before, the night before.
The biggie I tell people, I know it's really classy, but try and get to where you pee as clear as possible.
So those general tips you hear, you need to drink half of your body weight.
But when you have to be out in the elements to be able to be hydrated is really going to help.
